Park in the car park next to the Grand Échaillon inn. A hiking signpost indicates the start (Col de la Bataille).
(S/E) Start to the right of the building, heading west, slightly uphill. You are now on the GR® du Tour du Vercors trail, marked in yellow and green. The trail quickly turns south and joins a stone path (Chemin du Grand Échaillon) which you take on the right until you reach the hiking signpost just before the sheepfold.
(1) Take the path on the left, join the D199 and follow it to the right for about 100 m.
(2) Turn right onto the Route Forestière du Ravin de Pissenible (cross-country ski trail in winter). The climb southwards is steady for over 1 km until you reach the first crossroads.
(3) Turn left towards the east and continue climbing, keeping your bearings. Be careful not to follow the track in a bend on the left; instead, take a path on the right. It runs alongside a fence, then pastures, before joining the D199 near the battle tunnel.
(4) Turn left and continue for about 250 m, leaving the first track on the left at the start of a wide bend and continuing for about 100 m until you reach a hiking signpost.
(5) Turn right, go through the gate and enter the Bois de Comblézine forest, descending for about 1.5 km. When you reach a slight bend to the right, be careful not to miss the start of a path on the left (elevation 1193).
(6) Do not follow the forest track, but take this path on the left. Further on, it joins a bend in the forest road.
(7) Turn right until you reach a junction after a left-hand bend.
(8) Take the leftmost track. Stay on the Route Forestière de Gampaloux, ignoring all the paths on the right and left, until you are above the ruined houses of Gampaloux, shortly after leaving the forest, at a fork in the road.
(9) Turn right onto the path towards the ruins, head towards the medium-voltage power line and join the GR® TV.
(10) Turn left, follow the yellow and red markings parallel to the medium-voltage line, cross a first and then a second forest track and keep to the path that leads to the Col du Lion.
(11) Go straight ahead and take the steeply descending path that enters the woods (this is a snowshoe trail in winter, you will find the markings). Shortly afterwards, it turns south-west and leads gently to the Grand Échaillon car park (S/E).
