Petit Galibier Ouest from Souvenir Henri Desgranges

This is a very short and easy hike to a summit offering a beautiful panoramic view of the nearby Écrins mountains, as well as Mont Blanc, La Vanoise, Queyras and Monte Viso.

Description of the walk

From Monêtier-les-Bains or Briançon, take the D1091 road towards the Col du Lautaret, then turn right onto the D902 towards the Col du Galibier. Park before the tunnel in the car park on the left-hand side of the road at the foot of the Henri Desgranges memorial.

From the car park, the destination of the hike is the clearly visible summit adorned with a large cairn to the west.
It can be reached either via the west-northwest ridge or the south ridge. The route described here is a circular route with an ascent via the west-northwest ridge and a return via the south side of the peak.

(S/E) From the Henri Desgranges memorial, take the north-west path until you reach a T-junction.

(1) Turn onto the path that branches off to the right. Follow this path up through the mountain pasture, cross the scree slope and join the ridge line of the peak.

(2) Take a sharp left turn, then follow the path eastwards to reach the summit of Petit Galibier Ouest, marked by a cairn.

(3) Descend via a good path on the southern ridge. Then head east to reach the T-junction from the outward journey.

(1) Turn right and head back to the car park (S/E).

  5. S/E : km 2.31 - alt. 2,547 m - Car park

Notes

I made a video with the names of the peaks, which shows the route and describes the atmosphere of this trail. (route map)

On this circular route, the path that crosses the hillside cuts across relatively steep slopes for a few metres. It is very narrow and becomes slightly exposed on this short section.

Option for hikers prone to vertigo.
(S/E) From the stele, go up the path to the crossroads.
(1) Turn left and follow the path up to the summit.
(3) Follow the same route back to the car park. (S/E)

I did this hike on 23 September 2014. At that time, this summit had no name.
It was called Point 2826. The IGN has since revised its map to give it its current name, Petit Galibier Ouest.
It is true that, like its big brother, it offers an exceptional panorama.
To enjoy it, I recommend doing this hike on a clear day and, if possible, in the morning to avoid the heat haze.

Superb hike with magnificent panoramic views at the summit.
The ascent and descent are sometimes done on sight.
However, be careful on the numerous sections that cross scree slopes:
walking poles are a good idea.

You were right to bypass the snowfields.
If there are too many of them, don't hesitate to turn back as a precaution.
Thank you, Rbisson, for your feedback.

A superb hike completed on 5 July 2024 on a beautiful blue-sky day with our two children (aged 7 and 10). It took us 3 hours in total (not including the long contemplative break at the summit!).
The first of the two main difficulties was the start of the fairly steep descent over rocks and scree: the path seemed to have been partially erased by winter, so we had to improvise a route over several metres. We found this section to be the most challenging. Good shoes and walking sticks are recommended!
The second difficulty was the presence of numerous snowfields still present at the beginning of July (note that we live in Canada, so this isn't the first time we've walked on snow! We had to go around several of them because of their slope (45 degrees in places), and even with boots and walking sticks, it was borderline for traction. We "solved" the problem by sliding down the snow for a few dozen metres (without incident) to avoid the most difficult area. And that's where Visorando came in handy to find the rest of the trail further down.
But apart from these difficulties, it's a superb hike, with a sublime view at the summit! The most beautiful of our stay in the Alps!
In short, we recommend it, but if you're not used to snow, maybe wait until it melts a little more before going, or bring your crampons and walking sticks!

Hike done in hot weather. So very pleasant due to the altitude.
A high mountain feel in a lunar landscape.

Hello Claude R3, and thank you for your comment.

In the guidebook, I indicated in "practical information" that the trail crossed a short, slightly exposed section on the uphill side, not the downhill side, cutting across a steep slope so that this section (very narrow for a few metres) should be approached with caution. I used the term "exposed" in the guidebook, which is justified because if you slip, you could potentially slide down a few metres or more and expose yourself to injury or worse.
That is the meaning of exposed.

However, on these sloping passages, some people who are prone to vertigo may feel dizzy, hence the notion of "aerial" mentioned in the comments. For some, it doesn't take much, as this notion is very subjective.

For an experienced mountaineer, of course, there is nothing aerial about this.

The descent trail, described as aerial, is in fact only steep, but not at all aerial, and remains passable without difficulty in dry weather.

Response to reviews by Afaurie and Chris63400

I also created the guidebook for the normal route up Pic Blanc du Galibier, as well as the one for Grand Galibier, on the website. The path to the summit bastion also cuts across very steep slopes where you can feel the drop below.
The ascent of Pic Blanc is still much more difficult overall than that of Petit Galibier Ouest.

If you take it slowly, the slightly exposed section is easy to navigate. I took a friend in her seventies who is a scaredy-cat and had never been mountain hiking before.
As I am also a contributor to the Altitude Rando website, I organised an outing based on my guidebook on 24/06/2015. You can see my friend
on this part of the trail in photo 6. You can see that this is not mountaineering but a simple hike
on trails that appear on the IGN map.
It's here (see photo 6), click on the photos to enlarge them.

But yes, Chris, I am cautious in the sense that I always prefer to err on the side of caution so that hikers can proceed slowly
carefully through these somewhat tricky passages.
Best regards

It's good to point out the tricky bit (vertigo) that might make some people turn back... but the route clearly shows that it can be avoided.
You can even "make a mistake" a little and reach the summit on the last few metres not via the ridge but a little lower down on the north side... and there, it's best not to fall and to do a bit of mountaineering = at the very least, make sure you have a good grip with every step. Vertigo is not allowed!
Thank you for your information sheets and for Visorando in general.
Best regards

I attempted this hike on a day when I was feeling dizzy and had to give up at the exposed section. I will try again, as the descent seems less difficult according to the recent description.
I finished at Pic Blanc du Galibier.
