Heritage and history trail in Gien

The tour starts from Place Jean Jaurès. Parking is available.

(S/E) Follow Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, then turn left to reach Quai Lenoir: Maison des Alix and Hôtel des Postes.

(1) Take Quai Lestrade on the right, pass the railway viaduct sign and continue tothe former chapel of the Couvent des Minimes.

(2) Retrace your steps, cut left across the car park, then turn right to reach Rue de la Fabrique. Turn left to reach the entrance to the Musée de la Faïencerie de Gien.

(3) Turn right to cross the market square (Place de la Victoire), then continue straight ahead on Rue Bernard Palissy. Cross Rue Jeanne d'Arc, continue straight ahead on Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, then turn left to pass in front of the town hall and the dedicated information panel. Go straight ahead, take the street on the right to cross the small green space, and reach the Place du Château and its car park. Take another street on the right to walk along it, then turn left to pass in front of the forecourt of the Church of Sainte-Jeanne-d'Arc. Then turn right and walk to the garden to get a view of the chevet of the church.

(4) Retrace your steps, walk almost all the way around the church to reach the Château-Musée de Gien. Go around it on the right, arrive at the castle terraces, then take the stairs leading to Place du Maréchal Leclerc.

(5) Cross the square towards Avenue du Maréchal Leclerc. Cross the avenue, then turn left and walk along the pavement on the right-hand side. Continue to the star-shaped crossroads where the statue of Vercingétorix stands.

(6) Turn right to follow Rue Thiers. At the junction with Rue Anne de Beaujeu, cross and turn left onto Rue Lejardinier. After about 20 metres, turn into the cul-de-sac on the right and go down the steps leading to a green space. Follow the path, turning first left, then right, to arrive at Les Arcades.

(7) Join Avenue des Boulards, follow it to the right for about 20 metres, then leave it for a path on the right that returns to the green space. At the end, take a path on the left, then Rue du Bordeaux on the right, until you reach Place Saint-Louis.

(8) Head left, turn left again onto Rue Louis Blanc, and you will come out onto the quay. Walk about 100 metres to the left to reach the Port au Bois and Loire Navigable information desk .

(9) Turn back and continue along the banks of the Loire on Quai Maréchal Joffre.

(10) Turn left to cross the bridge over the Loire. At the end, go down to the right to walk along the riverbank and go to the Gien Plage sign . Retrace your steps, go around the roundabout on the left and go to the Marine de Loire sign . Retrace your steps along the riverbank, go back up onto the bridge and cross it in the other direction.

(10) Cross over to reach Place du Maréchal Leclerc opposite.

(5) Take Rue Gambetta (pedestrianised) on the left to return to Place Jean Jaurès (S/E).
