Description of the walk

Park at the La Roche Jagu car park.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, ignore the first path on the right (for horse riders and cyclists) and take the next one on the right, the Allée des Camélias. Continue straight on until you pass above the ponds.

(1) Keep to the right until you reach the junction with the Route de la Roche Jagu.

(2) Cross carefully and continue along the grassy path opposite.

(3) At the junction with the second road, take a short detour to the right to reach the modest Chapel of Saint Quay, founded by the lords of La Roche Jagu in the 16th century. Retrace your steps and continue along this country road to the hamlet of Kermadec (signposted), ignoring the various roads and paths on either side.

(4) At the end of the hamlet, take the small road on the left, continue to the first bend (about 200 m away) then take a grassy path on the right that leads downhill. Continue through the forest along this well-marked path until you reach the small road that leads by car to the slipway on the banks of the Trieux.

(5) At the junction with this small road, follow it uphill for a few dozen metres until you reach a wide forest path on the right: the entrance is marked by two low stone walls and a wooden gate. Follow this path along the upper section overlooking the Parc de la Roche Jagu, ignoring the paths leading down to the right. On an open stretch, you can enjoy a lovely view of the château and its terraced grounds.

(6) At the end of the path, take a descending track leading to a wooden bridge (visible from above). After the bridge, turn left onto a track that runs along the top of the willow plantations, flax drying racks and ponds, leading to the source of the Stanco. Return to the track taken on the way out.

(1) Turn right as you finish skirting the ponds and follow a wide path down towards the slipway and the salt marshes. You’ll pass the palm grove and other surprises hidden in the embankments.

(7) From the slipway, there is a view of an old farmhouse, now the Coat Ermit lodge, overlooking the river. Take a well-marked path on the left which climbs and follows the Trieux: ignore the small path closest to the Trieux, which ends in a dead end. Continue to the silver rock, ignoring the paths branching off to the left: there is a lovely view of the castle and the Trieux.

(8) Continue along the path, which veers further away from the Trieux as it turns left and reaches a junction.

(9) Turn left and continue along the ascending path leading to Château de la Roche Jagu: along the way, a wooden viewing platform offers fine views.

(10) Head left, walk past the château and continue to the large viewing platform on the right, which offers a final, magnificent view of the Trieux valley. Walk down to the horse paddock.

(11) There are plenty of options here to explore the park, have a picnic, visit the château and its medieval gardens, or head straight back to the car park (S/E).

Notes

No signposting.

Few roads; best done at high tide if possible, and even better in March or April to enjoy the camellias in bloom at the start of the route.

Depending on the season, muddy conditions are possible, particularly between the points (4) and (5).

The circular route can be a good warm-up for a full day at La Roche Jagu on fine days when everything is open (https://larochejagu.fr/horaires-d-ouverture).

In the castle’s main courtyard: toilets, drinking water, restaurant.

Hello everyone; Thank you for suggesting this lovely and varied route (historic monuments, wooded areas, stunning views over the Trieux, unspoilt countryside). It’s best to do this route in late winter… before the deciduous trees come into leaf!!!

Thank you, Marie Annick, for your comment,
I actually decided to describe this walk because I once got lost trying to retrace it from memory a year after doing it with friends.
It’s true that signposting would make it easier. However, that’s not up to me. I’ll try to get in touch with the relevant organisations in due course to see if it’s possible to arrange it. I’m glad you enjoyed it; you did it on a lovely Easter Monday, so it must have been very pretty, and as a result it was no doubt busier than usual, particularly in the castle grounds.
I wish you lots of lovely walks!

A lovely route – it’s a shame it isn’t signposted.
There was a part of the route I didn’t know; I discovered some lovely views. There are a few climbs that are worth the effort, but it’s an easy route overall.
