Description of the walk

Two possible starting points. Here we set off from the car park by the orientation table, but you can also park in the town centre of Montesquieu and start the walk at point 3.

Trail marked in yellow

(S/E) From the car park, turn left onto the small path that climbs up to the orientation table. You’ll have a panoramic view of the Pyrenees and the village of Montesquieu-Volvestre.
Turn left at the orientation table and follow the small path to the left of the closed gate, which runs alongside a hillock topped by an antenna. Turn right through the undergrowth, which leads back to the car park.

(1) From there, follow the grassy path to the right, running alongside a fence. When you reach the road, continue straight on to the end of the cul-de-sac. Follow the shaded path on the right to the road (D40).

(2) Turn right along the road and then right again (Chemin des Perdous). Continue straight on along the road, then along a shaded path that continues from it.

(3) At the road, turn right. Do not follow the yellow arrow pointing left, unless you wish to take the opportunity to visit the village centre with its church and the banks of the Arize. You will find an information panel about an old chapel.
The route first follows a tarmac road, then a grassy path which leads onto the main road. Take care. Turn right and continue straight on until you reach the car park by the orientation table on your right (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 328 m - Car park by the orientation table
  2. 1 : km 0.22 - alt. 331 m - Grassy path on the right
  3. 2 : km 0.86 - alt. 241 m - On the right, along the Le Carne road
  4. 3 : km 1.49 - alt. 237 m - Street on the right
  5. S/E : km 2.05 - alt. 328 m - Car park by the orientation table

Notes

A shaded walk with the option of heading down to the River Arize if you decide to visit the town centre of Montesquieu-Volvestre.

Picnic table next to the orientation table.

Make sure you wear sturdy shoes as there is a steep climb and a steep descent along the path.

Worth a visit

A lovely view of the Pyrenees mountain range, illustrated on an orientation board created by the children of Montesquieu school.

If you decide to make a detour via the town centre, the church of Montesquieu and the banks of the Arize are well worth a visit.

Hello,

A very pleasant route, with a magnificent view from the viewpoint; best done in sunny weather (like today) but a bit too short.
Parking near the care home on Allée de Couloumé, we first did the Monléon circular route (route no. 3 on the town hall website, 1½ hours for 4km and 100m of elevation gain), which also offers some lovely views of Montesquieu and the Pyrenees.
We followed this route in the direction described but starting at point 2 (Chemin des Perdous).
Note that there is a very muddy section on the descent to the D40 (which we would have found difficult to climb in the other direction...).

Hello,
A hike starting from the village, beginning with the ascent; lovely views of the Pyrenees mountain range from the orientation table
in wet weather, the descent from the mast can be very slippery

Hello, it’s a bit tricky to find the right start from the car park. You need to take the path blocked by a barrier. You then head up to the information board and walk around the mobile phone masts before coming back down to take the path below the one by the barrier. Please be careful: the path is currently very, very muddy and slippery, with water running off in places.
A short, quick and enjoyable hike with a stunning view; I couldn’t resist going back to the orientation table before setting off again.
Thanks to Jour de Lune for sharing this.

First outing since lockdown – a very pleasant walk, partly in the shade, partly in the sun, partly through the countryside and partly through the village. A few muddy sections in the woods (make sure you wear suitable footwear)
One slight hiccup: to find the start point, the information board is right at the end of the path behind the gate, whereas the start of the walk is on the left before the gate.
Magnificent and enjoyable views ☀️😊

I had trouble matching the directions on the website with the signs on the ground. It was only when I looked closely at the map afterwards that I realised we’d taken the wrong path.
