The Chemin du Castéra and Chemin de Monléon in Montesquieu-Volvestre

Starting from the beautiful medieval village of Montesquieu-Volvestre, discover a rural getaway on the paths and ridge roads. After a beautiful climb, you can admire the Pyrenees mountain range from the Castera orientation table. It was made of ceramic by the famous artist Toutain with the children of the village. The peaks of the Pyrenees will hold no more secrets for you! A picnic table awaits you right next to it. The panorama sometimes offers 360° views of the Arize plain and the Volvestre hillsides. At the end of the route, you will quickly follow the wild Arize river.

Description of the walk

From Carbonne, take the D627 towards Rieux-Volvestre. Drive past the village and head towards Montesquieu-Volvestre. Park at Place de la Halle.

(S/E) Opposite the Maison France Service, turn right towards Rue de la Porte Sensac. Pass in front of one of the oldest houses in the bastide. Continue straight on and cross the Route de l’Esplanade Nord, the town’s former moat. Head straight ahead, then turn right at the fork onto the Côte du Castéra. At the bend, take the dirt track straight ahead. At the end of the dirt track, follow the road up to the left for about fifty metres to reach the Chemin des Hourquets.

(1) Turn right and join the D40. Walk carefully along it, keeping in the same direction until the first junction.

(2) Turn right, following the sign for the “orientation table”. Immediately afterwards, turn right again to reach the orientation table created by the artist Toustain with the local children. Once you’ve retraced your steps, take the path on the right which descends until it reaches the road. Cross with care and continue along the tarmac path. Before it ends, turn onto a dirt track on the right which descends and joins the main road.

(3) Turn right onto the D40 with care, then turn left onto the tarmac path known as Sainte-Rame below the D40: Persian tulips bloom here in spring. Continue along the track, cross the stream and turn left onto a dirt track. Then continue right along the track that climbs until you reach a crossroads. Take the second road on the right, almost directly opposite, towards the ridge for about 200 m.

(4) Head down to the right along a path between two meadows to a small bridge crossing a spring. Take the wooden steps to climb the embankment on the left. Continue along this path to the top of the hill, then turn right and head back towards the town whilst admiring the Pyrenees.

(5) Continue until you reach theD40B, then turn left for 10 metres. Turn right towards Couloumé Park, which has a children’s play area, a fitness trail, picnic areas, fishing facilities and toilets.

(6) Head back towards the town centre along the banks of the river "l'Arize". Once you reach the top of the bridge, head towards the town hall and continue along Rue Mage until you reach the Halle (S/E).

Worth a visit

The Persian tulip is a variety of tulip endemic to the Volvestre region. Montesquieu-Volvestre is fortunate to have a protected area where this magnificent flower grows in spring at the end of Chemin de Sainte-Rame.

Hello Shrando31410,

Thank you for all this useful additional information for future hikers!
Although the elevation gain is low, this route does take you up and down some steep slopes, which will definitely make your legs feel it.

Enjoy your future hikes in Volvestre!

A route with some good climbs. At the "Table d'orientation" sign after the barrier, follow the path on the right for a beautiful view of Montesquieu. The second part of the route towards Monléon is wilder and offers a variety of pleasant paths. Here too, there are plenty of climbs.

Enjoy your hike, but be careful as the trails can be a bit muddy at this time of year. There are two lovely viewpoints. The start is uninteresting, so it's better to begin at the orientation table.

Hello,

we had already done this very pleasant route, with several magnificent panoramic views, in February 2022, starting from the "Panorama over Montesquieu-Volvestre and the Pyrenees" route, but found it too short.
Best done in sunny weather (like today) to avoid muddy descents.
