Start from Sengern church.
(S/E) Take Rue du Felsenbach, which runs straight on from the church and climbs southwards, marked with a Blue Triangle. Walk 300 m until you reach the water tank on your left. At this point, turn right. After four or five houses, leave the village via the path that continues from the street.
From the village exit, walk for almost 800 m until you reach a hairpin bend formed by another path. Do not take this path but, just before it, take the small path that climbs to the left.
(1) Continue left on the path marked with a Blue Triangle. You’ll come out onto a forest track; follow it in the same direction.
(2) Walk past the Eckgrod hut and continue straight on. The climb is quite steep up to the Gustiberg farmhouse inn.
(3) Take the path that runs between the buildings. After a hairpin bend, continue along the gently sloping path, marked with a Blue Cross, to reach Lac du Ballon ( photo).
(4) Follow the Blue Cross for another 400 m or so.
(5) Take the path on the left marked with a Yellow Triangle.
(6) Please note: at a hairpin bend turning left, switch markers to follow the Yellow Rectangle. This path starts on the left, descending for a few metres, then climbs again to the Col du Haag ( photos, Street View).
(7) On leaving the forest, cross the road and follow theGR®5Red Rectangle marker (Red-White-Red) to the right. After 100 m, turn left towards “Chalet Hôtel Club Vosgien”.
(7) The path runs almost directly across the terrace of the Chalet Hôtel Club Vosgien, at 1,343 m street view. (E).
If you’re still up for it, you can climb to the summit of the Grand Ballon via the path that starts at the foot of the chalet hotel, a 15-minute walk ( Street View).
A day trip. The route is clearly marked, except near the cable car ruins. For someone in good physical condition, it makes for a lovely day’s walk. The views are breathtaking, and the Klintzkopf is an absolute must. The path is open from 1 July to 30 November only. Well done on this route.
