The Smugglers’ Trail in Haut-Florival

During the Second World War, the smuggling networks relied on local residents – notably the ‘marcaires’ (high-mountain farmers) and railway workers – to help escaped prisoners, draft-dodgers and the rebellious ‘Malgré-Nous’ cross over to the other side of the Vosges.

The Guebwiller Region’s ‘Land of Art and History’ and the Amitié Florival Magnoac association invite you to explore the Smugglers’ Trail in Haut-Florival.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Linthal Town Hall.

(S/E) Walk down towards the church, follow it along, then turn right onto the path marked with yellow triangles and yellow crosses by the Club Vosgien. Join the road at a bend, where you’ll take the sloping path marked with yellow triangles and yellow crosses. Then take the Bienwald forest track, marked with a yellow cross. Stop at the turning area before the path narrows.

(1) Follow the Bienwald path, marked with a Yellow Cross, then turn right onto the path marked with a Yellow Cross. At the junction, leave the Yellow Cross markings and take the Niederremspach village path on the left. Stop at the Notre-Dame chapel in Niederremspach.

(2) Continue along the Niederremspach path through the forest and then through the hamlet.

(3) Stay on the Niederremspach path. At the end, take the steep climb on the right up to the dirt track. At the top, stop in front of the farm.

(4) Take the Remspach forest road and follow it to the right. Note the old Remspach inn.

(5) Continue straight on along the Remspach forest road. At the junction, take the tarmac path on the left, leading to Obersengern. At the bend, take the path on the right.

(6) Walk past the houses and the farm and continue along the path, which curves to the left. Stop just before the farm and enjoy the view of the scrubland.

(7) Take the small path to the right of the field, marked with a Yellow Triangle. When you reach the bottom at the crossroads (do not go past the point with an altitude of 664 m above sea level), turn left at the whistle. When the path widens to form a clearing, take the small path on the right known as the ‘Schleif’.

(8) Walk down Rue du Hilsenfirst on the right until you reach the Town Hall car park (S/E).

There’s a mistake in the Visorando route description: after the first climb leading to the Remspach road, follow the Club Vosgien signposts which turn left – do not continue any further up as indicated!
This led me to end up on the road, which is dangerous for pedestrians!
