Mont Riounet from the village of Roya

Starting from Roya, a hike through a wild valley to Mont Riounet, which overlooks the resort of Auron and offers a beautiful panorama of the surrounding area (the Tinée peaks, the Mounier chain, the Mercantour-Argentera massif) and other more distant peaks to the north (Col de la Bonette, Aiguille and Brec de Chambeyron, Tête de Moïse, Pics de la Font Sancte, Mont Viso, etc.). Ideal in autumn, to admire the colours and, with a little luck, to hear and see the deer bellowing.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park at the end of the road after the hamlet of Roya.

(S/E) Take the track, which quickly becomes a path, overlooking the stream.

(1) Ignore the path on the left leading to Col de Crous and continue straight ahead to stay on the left bank.

(2) Continue in the same direction, ignoring a path that climbs to the right. Head towards Trou des Corneilles.

(3) Cross the bridge over the river, then follow it for a while to enter the heart of the Mercantour Park. Reach Trou des Corneilles, a natural bridge overlooking the valley.

(4) Continue to follow the stream on the right bank and reach a footbridge.

(5) Cross the main stream and then, immediately to the right, a second torrent. From there, the path is less obvious, so you need to follow the yellow markings, which are sometimes difficult to see from a distance.

(6) Cross another stream, pass between some ruined buildings (yellow markings), then climb towards the cross (2,030 m), carefully following the markings.

(7) From the cross, the path is clearer. Stay on the spur to continue the ascent (yellow markings). Take a track to the Col de Chavalet.

(8) Be sure to take the path on the left, which runs almost horizontally towards the west: do not take the tracks to the Auron resort. Follow the yellow markings to progress towards the summit. Just below the summit, the slopes are steeper and you may need to use your hands to reach it.

(9) Enjoy the view and retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Access by car from the Tinée valley. Small car park but not very busy. On foot from adjacent valleys. Lodge in Roya.

Hike on a trail (yellow markings) for the entire route, except for the last few metres below the summit.

Small streams up to the point (5) but nothing significant, especially in summer.

Shelters and huts all along the hike to the Col de Chavalet.

The last few metres to the summit of Mont Riounet are steep and may require the use of your hands, but nothing complicated.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Good description of the hike, enjoyable in autumn, with lovely views.
For more experienced hikers – unmarked route – option for a circular route with Mont Triboulet, which only adds 3 km and 150 m of elevation gain, but the descent on the south-western flank is quite steep and the ground is not very stable. It improves once you reach the grass. Walking sticks and GPS were very useful...
