Col de Crous round trip

The military structure built at Col de Crous provided passage between the Tuébi and Péone valley to the south and the Roya (Tinée) valley to the north.
The small structure was built between 1932 and 1939 by military labour (MOM), more specifically by a detachment from the27th Algerian Rifle Regiment under the supervision of personnel from the7th Engineer Regiment.
The support structures were built underground, dug several metres into the rock, while the combat structures, scattered across the surface in the form of blocks, were protected by thick steel armour plating and layers of reinforced concrete. The underground facilities housed barracks for the crew.
High-altitude climatic conditions, a lack of resources and the non-priority nature of the project delayed progress. In June 1940, fighting against the Italians cancelled all work planned for the summer season.

Description of the walk

Take the M2205 towards Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée, then turn onto the M61 at Le Bourguet towards Roya. Once in Roya, park at the car park at the end of the road or, if it is full, in the small car park behind the church in the village and walk back up to the car park to reach the start of the hike.

Yellow PR® markings

(S/E) Start at marker 140, at the end of the car park at the end of the road. Follow the Å trail westwards to the next marker.

(1) At marker 142, turn left onto the path leading down to the Roya Valley.

(2) Once you have crossed the bridge, turn right and follow the path marked with a horizontal yellow line and/or cairns. The landscape changes regularly depending on how the banks have been shaped by the various floods of the torrent. Welcome to the Mercantour Park.

(3) Follow the well-marked path with yellow horizontal markings towards the south-west. When crossing the meadows of the Alp valley, follow the cairns. There are no particular difficulties until you reach the summit.

(4) From the Alp valley, change slopes by crossing the torrent, heading south-east to the Col de Crous.

(5) Return to the car park (S/E) by following the same route you took on the way up.
