Mont Morbié and Mont Pelat circular route from Col du Frêne

These two twin peaks are fairly low in altitude, but after heavy snowfall, climbing them on snowshoes is an interesting hike offering extensive views.

Description of the walk

Departure from Col du Frêne, reached from Les Bauges via Sainte-Reine or from Saint-Pierre-d'Albigny. Car park on the Bauges side of the pass.

(S/E) Almost opposite the car park, take the path heading north towards the forest. After a wide circular loop to the left, it arrives at a series of clearings, all of which are passable in snow. Continue climbing south-west until you reach a crossroads.

(1) Most tracks turn right (see alternative route), but continue straight on south-west, climbing through the forest until you reach the edge of the cliffs overlooking the Combe de Savoie in Cra.

(2) Climb to the right up the ridge via a steep slope, then the slope levels out and you will find yourself in the forest overlooking the Bois Saint-André.

(3) Turn right to continue climbing the ridge, now heading north, until you reach some meadows. Stay on the ridge, which crosses a copse and descends slightly to the top of Pré Pignon. Continue a little further along the edge between the forest and the meadow until you reach its upper limit near a fence.

(4) Climb straight up into the forest on the left to rejoin the ridge trail, which climbs steadily until it leaves the forest in a setting of mountain pastures and then reaches the summit of Mont Morbier (or Morbié).

(5) Descend due west and climb back up opposite Mont Pelat (arrival point of the Aillons chairlift).

(6) Follow the ridge north-east (towards Mont de la Vierge) and after a good hundred metres, turn right into the valley, heading east, cross the ridge from Mont Morbier and continue downhill through the Plamand meadows until you reach a good pastoral path descending from Chalet de Margerie.

(7) Take this path to the right and descend along this gently sloping path with wide hairpin bends, some of which can be cut across if you can see clearly. At the bottom of this long descent, there is a junction with a path leading up to the right towards the chalets of La Cornue.

(8) Continue down the path, which turns left towards Routhennes. Shortly after a bend, turn right onto a forest path that is circular and heads back towards Routhennes.

(9) When you reach a field, leave it and cross the flat field towards the south-east until you find a forest path that descends slightly.
Continue along this path, ignoring the paths leading downhill to the left (which take you too far down), and keep heading south-east, with a few slight ascents, to rejoin the uphill path at a bend. Take this path to the left to return to the starting point nearby (S/E).

Notes

There are no directional signs in this area, so you will need to have a good sense of direction.
There are old markings (paint marks) along the Cra ridge at Mont Morbier, which may be reassuring in places.

Alternative route: the passage along the Cra ridge is not easy to follow and is quite steep in places. If there are no tracks in this direction, it is easier to turn right at (1) to climb up through the forest towards the Cornue chalets and continue along grassy slopes in summer to Pré Pignon, between (3) and (4), to rejoin the ridge to the summit.

Worth a visit

Beautiful views as you climb up to Arclusaz, Beaufortain and Grand Arc.
From the summits, views over the whole of Les Bauges: Trélod, Arcalod, Colombier, then Margériaz (from Mont Pelat), over La Lauzière, Belledonne-Sept-Laux and Grandes Rousses.

Snowshoe hike with 20 cm of powder snow from the previous day, very sticky, in 5 hours as indicated. The Cra section at the top of Pré Pignon is wild and beautiful, with no tracks in the snow. Mont Morbié, on the other hand, was packed with ski tourers. The descent down the piste was peaceful and enjoyable. On the way back, I missed the junction at point 9 and ended up reaching the pass via the road. I will do this hike again without snowshoes.

A beautiful hike with magnificent views of the Bauges mountains. As already mentioned in the reviews, the last part across the fields is a bit tricky without a GPS, but with a good sense of direction you'll get there.

A fantastic hike with a steep climb before reaching Mont Morbié. 360° view. Easy descent via the forest road. The last 500 metres before the Col de Frêne car park in the forest are more challenging if you don't have GPS, as there are no marked trails. Worth doing again.

No need to take snowshoes or crampons. No snow on the route. I don't know if I'll do the circular hike in the other direction to get the view. But this way is easier on the knees. It took us 2 hours and 55 minutes to complete the circular hike. It's a very pleasant and varied hike. With the Visorando route, there's no need to worry.

We had a wonderful day on this route, which requires a little physical effort on the climb but not too much (we didn't need to put on our snowshoes all day).
It was a mystical climb, alone in the woods and clouds, and once we reached above the clouds, the snow-covered landscapes were magical, as was the arrival at the summit of Mont Morbier and Pelat!
Then the descent through the meadows was done on our backsides, which was great fun... Towards the end, the winding descent is a bit endless, but we came away happy from this beautiful outing just a few kilometres from home! Thank you for this guide.

An original route as it is unmarked – well done to the author. The climb up Mont Morbié is endless, as is the descent, and there is not much variety.
With the GPx track, there are no orientation problems.
Great views. We really enjoyed it.
