Description of the walk

Park in the Antiques car park (now a pay-and-display car park: €4 for 6 hours).

(S/E) Head north to admire the Roman monuments, then cross the road (D5) with care to reach Allée Saint Paul, first turning right then left. Go round the right-hand side of the Prieuré Saint-Paul de Mausole by taking the Chemin des Carrières for 50 m.

(1) Turn right onto the Vallon Saint-Clerg nature trail. First, walk alongside the fenced-off site of the ancient ruins of Glanum and enter the Vallon de Saint-Clerg. Continue through the valley until you spot the ruins of a small chapel overgrown with ivy.

(2) Take the path on the right (be careful, the start in the boxwood is barely visible). Climb steeply up this steep path where you may need to use your hands at times. Pass under a rock arch and arrive at the foot of a large metal ladder.

(3) Climb the two sections of secured ladders along the rock face. Continue climbing the steep path, which sometimes passes through cavities (watch your head). At the point where the path emerges on the other side, turn right. The path then descends steeply to the left until it meets a path coming from the right.

(4) Turn left, cross a small pass and climb up using your hands to reach a small plateau.

(5) Climb to the right along a rocky path, marked with a Blue Cross, to quickly reach the summit of Mont Gaussier. Be careful: in addition to the sheer drops on each side, there is a huge hole in the summit plateau.
Head back down to the previous junction.

(5) Continue to the right along the ledge path, using the handrail on the right for support, until you reach a ladder.

(6) Descend the secured metal ladder. Continue straight ahead along the ridge path. You will emerge onto the tarmac road of the television relay station. Walk a few metres to the left and climb the path opposite on the left. After the viewpoint at the top of the hill (alt. 348 m), descend to the Rocher des Deux Trous.

(7) Retrace your steps for a few metres and continue along the path on the left. Descend, cross the road to the television relay station and continue along the Chemin de Baume Brignolle to reach a hairpin bend.

(8) Turn right at the hairpin bend onto the path leading down. At the Gaudre de la Foux bend, take the path branching off to the right. Return to the main path and follow it to the Caume car park.

(9) Cross the car park and the D5 road with care. Turn right onto the GR®6

(10) Head down to the right to the Lac du Peirou car park.

(11) Follow the riverbank to the right, then the red and white markings of the GR®6. The very steep path leads to the foot of the cliff. Using the chains, make your way to the entrance of a through-cave.

(12) Climb the ladder formed of pitons anchored in the rock, using the chains on your right-hand side for support. You will emerge at the top of the cave on the other side.

(13) Leave the GR® and take a path to the left. Ignore all the paths leading off to the right back to the GR®. Climb up to the cliff ridge (be careful not to get too close to the edge). You are now looking down on the lake. Head back down towards the north on a faint path and join the Gaudre du Rougadou.

(14) Follow the Gaudre, heading right. Ignore the path that branches off a little further on to the right. You’ll come out onto a track leading to the car park (S/E)

I started the hike from the Caume car park (point 9), which meant I didn't have to pay for parking at Glanum, and followed the hiking trail.
It wasa very beautiful hike in the Alpilles, but I got lost several times:
- Point 13: I didn't see the path that branched off to the left, so I followed a wild boar trail according to my GPS until I reached the hiking trail (I don't know where I could have missed it). Also, before point 14, there is a fairly steep descent (slab but not slippery) at the end of the scree.
- Before point 5: always take the upper path (if you are unsure, as I was).

The descent between 8 and 9 is monotonous. There is a bit of a bottleneck on the ladders at the Peiroou cave.

A very nice hike, definitely worth it. Be careful, however, as the markings are sometimes very discreet, especially in the small scree slope after passing through the first cave. The area around the two holes is very busy due to a tarmac road that makes it easy to access. The end of the route is of average interest, as we parked at the lake to avoid paying for parking at Glanum.

We couldn't find the start of point 13 to 14, so we descended via the GR. A magnificent hike with truly breathtaking views. A technical hike nonetheless.

A very beautiful hike in the stunning Alpilles mountains. Beautiful panoramic views. Climbing up a cliff using ladders is great fun as it is very safe. Beautiful trails and paths. The section behind the lake is very interesting and climbing through the gap is also great fun. Everything is magnificent on this short but very interesting hike.
Ideal for showing this beautiful area to visiting friends.
