South valley of the Caume Plateau after the ridges and Mont Gaussier

The southern slope of the Caume Plateau is very suitable for winter hiking. This slope benefits from late sunshine and provides protection from the rather cold mistral wind after walking along part of the ridges coming from the Montagne des Deux Trous.

(Please note) This route passes through the perimeter of the prefectural decree protecting the Caume biotope.

Description of the walk

Park around the Glanum site on the edge of the castle driveway in Saint-Rémy-en-Provence.

(S/E): From there, take the DFCI path that forms the Discovery Trail to the Rocher des Deux Trous. Continue along this path to Saint-Clerg and reach a crossroads at the highest point.

(1) Leave the small road on your right and take a fairly wide path on your left, which climbs quite steeply up a hill.
You will reach the Rocher des Deux Trous, which is clearly visible at the top of this climb.
Enjoy the panoramic view from Rocher des Deux Trous, a well-known landmark in this area.

(2) Retrace your steps for a few metres and turn left onto a fairly wide path towards the telecommunications tower opposite on the Plateau de la Caume. At the bottom of the short descent, join the road that supports theGR®®6.

(3) Turn left onto theGR®® and begin a short climb. At the next bend, leave theGR®® and take the path on the right that cuts across the next two or three bends. Take care on this path as it is steep and a little technical, making it challenging, but it avoids the road section.
You will quickly rejoin the road and the GR®®.

(4) Continue straight ahead, following the red and whiteGR®® markings; this fairly wideGR®® reaches the end of the Plateau de la Caume. At the pylon, continue to the left to reach the edge of the plateau.
Go back slightly and turn left to rejoin theGR®®, still on the ridge, to reach the Pas de l'Aigle.

(5) Continue along a narrower and sometimes very technical path with some tricky sections. Then, in a hollow, you will come to a cairn indicating the path downhill.

(6) Leave theGR®® here and turn right onto the path consisting of scree and a few fairly technical passages, but only for a short distance.
Reach the small plain, cross the bed of the Gaudre de Malaga stream and reach the Chemin de Beaume Rignolle.

(7) Do not take the wide DFCI path but the path on the right, continue and rejoin the Chemin de Beaume Rignolle a few hundred metres further on.

(8) Cross it and continue straight ahead on the small path that runs along a rocky ridge almost at its foot through fairly open vegetation and follow the few small hilly passages. You will rejoin the Chemin de Beaume Rignolle at a crossroads with a large Leyland cypress tree.

(9) Cross the track again and take this path, which is actually a shortcut marked by the passage of 4x4 vehicles. Join another narrower but well-marked path, which you should follow downhill to the right.
From there, it is a very pretty path resembling a private driveway, with cypress trees and diverse vegetation, which follows a small stream called Vallon des Amants and winds easily at the foot of the Plateau de la Caume and under the telecommunications tower, revealing a magnificent setting. Reach the beginning of a small valley.

(10) Enter this valley. Gradually, the path becomes wider and more passable, leading back to the Chemin de Beaume Rignolle, marked by a crossroads.

(11) Turn left onto the path that descends slightly to reach a road junction with a cistern.

(12) Go up this road, turning right to reach a hairpin bend just before thefirst crossroads you passed on the way there.

(1) Here, you have two options:
- retrace your steps to return via the discovery trail descending to the left and rejoin the Glanum site car park (S/E)
or
- continue left (as shown on the map) along the path leading up to Mont Gaussier via the ladder trail, as indicated on the signs, to reach Mont Gaussier.

(13) Here too, there are two possibilities:
- continue straight ahead along the Mont Gaussier ladder path on the ridge to descend into the valleys, but this section requires climbing skills and a head for heights . Hikers who are prone to vertigo should not take this path and should return to the previous crossroads. For others, take either the road or the discovery trail, both of which lead back to the Glanum car park (S/E)
or
- return via the same route to the previous crossroads (as shown on the map).

(1) Turn left onto the Discovery Trail to return to the Glanum Site car park (S/E).

Practical information

Preliminary remarks:
- starting from the ancient site of Glanum, this route passes through the Deux Trous mountain, following part of the plateau's ridges and reaching Mont Gaussier via the southern slope.
- passing through the Vallon des Amants, below the telecommunications tower, it offers a beautiful diversity of vegetation and a beautiful panorama of the cliffs of the Caume plateau, which is less frequented but just as magnificent, especially with the sun illuminating this side in winter.
- overall, this route is not technical, except for a few sections descending from the ridges, but it is accessible with children and offers an interesting alternative on this side of the plateau.
- on Mont Gaussier, this route does not take the ladder route but simply a round trip to enjoy the view.
The full ladder route is more suited to people with climbing skills.

Quite a few people heading to Rocher des Deux Trous, but the flora along the way is very interesting. Easy route to follow, no technical difficulties (but not suitable for people with joint problems). Completed in 3 hours and 40 minutes with a 20-minute break.
From point 8 to 11, we encountered a few grass snakes along the way.

A very beautiful hike reserved for experienced walkers as some sections are technical. The view of the plateau is magnificent, with varied vegetation in the valley.

Wonderful hike on 14/04/2024 with a slight variation as I had already done the Rocher des Deux Trous and Mont Gaussier.
Excellent description, plus the route has been redrawn and is very well marked, with magnificent views from the ridges.
Thank you to Visorandeur Dguillon for sharing this hike with us.

We had a little trouble finding the start of the hike, but after that everything was well signposted and marked. The view from the ridges is magnificent. It's a hike I would happily do again

A friend with whom I hike quite often didn't know about this beautiful hike, so it was an opportunity to do it again, but this time including Lake Peïroou and the cave/chimney.
We set off from the Maison de Santé, near Glanum. The weather was sunny and clear, with blue skies but a strong, icy wind. We climbed Mont Gaussier via the Échelles trail, then followed the ridges before walking for 10 minutes on a tarmac section to reach Rocher des Deux Trous, where we were alone!
We stopped for tea and biscuits before climbing up to the Plateau de la Caume, then continued along the GR. I didn't remember the trail being so well marked on my previous walks... Be careful not to miss the small path that branches off to the right just after a cairn, and don't be surprised by a red cross on a stone, as you have to leave the GR.
Descend into a small valley and walk along pleasant paths to the car park on the edge of the D5 road.
Access to Lake Peïroou in less than 40 minutes, and return to Glanum via the cave/chimney and its crossing with iron steps and chains. But nothing complicated!
It took us 6 hours, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather despite the icy wind!
A beautiful hike that you never tire of! Definitely worth doing again!

Very beautiful hike, varied landscapes. We went up the ladders on Mont Gaussier on the way there (we preferred to climb up rather than down – alternative route suggested from point 13 in the description)
Thank you for this detailed and reliable description!

A very beautiful hike starting from Glanum. Varied landscapes ranging from woodland to plateaus and ridges. No chance of getting bored on this hike! The first half of the route is quite challenging. The signage is good (signposts, maps and GPS app). Difficult sections are clearly marked and well described.

The walking time may be slightly overestimated (completed in 3½ hours including breaks).

Avoid in hot weather, but very pleasant with the ladders and the rock with two holes. Dogs must be kept on a lead as this is a nature reserve. Not particularly difficult, but bring plenty of water as there are no places to drink.

Discovering the Alpilles for the first time. A superb hike that took three hours, including breaks, walking at a brisk pace. No particular difficulties and a little treasure hidden on Mont Gaussier... I won't say any more!

I would describe the rocky sections along the ridge as "difficult" rather than "tricky".
On the ridge, the small pass where you turn right is not easy to spot, as the cairn is hidden by vegetation. When you arrive at the DFCI in 7, the small path is not easy to find. The rest of the route is fairly obvious and pleasant. Best done in good weather (the ridges)

A magnificent walk!
A must-do
We extended the route along the ridges to reach the valley further on at the lowest point of the GR
you need to be in good physical shape, have good shoes, and there are a few rocky passages that are a bit tricky but not dangerous!

Hello, lovely walk, but there are not enough landmarks along the route. Points 6 and 7 lack precision, and we found ourselves in the heath following what looked like a trail. Otherwise, a very beautiful walk

This hike is magnificent. The route through the Alpilles is varied and the route shows us the beauty of the site.
It's worth doing again when it's quieter. There were lots of people at the start due to its proximity to the Glanum archaeological site in St Rémy de Provence.
We used some of the ladders at Mont Gaussier, but nothing insurmountable.
We will return and the proposed route is worth keeping.
