Moissac - Auvillar

Thirty-fourth stage of the Way of St James. For this recovery stage, you follow the banks of the Tarn, the Garonne and the Golfech Canal for 15 km. After this section, it is almost entirely flat all the way to Espalais. A final short climb will, however, be necessary to reach Auvillar.

Description of the walk

(D) From the campsite, head towards Moissac via the Route de Gandalou and cross the Pont Napoléon (it is possible to cross directly from the left bank to the right bank of the Tarn by shuttle boat from the small jetty at the campsite).
(1) After the bridge, turn left to reach the riverbank, the GR®65 and the greenway. Head west, following the Tarn on your left. After Montebello Primary School, turn right and continue to the roundabout.
(2) Follow the Véloroute des deux Mers, which runs alongside the Garonne side canal. Stay on the path that runs along the riverbank until you reach the Espagnette Lock.
(3) At Espagnette Lock 26, continue straight on the GRP® Voie Verte route, letting the GR®65 branch off to the right. Pass under the Boudou Bridge and continue to Petit Bézy Lock No. 27.
(4) Continue along the canal and head towards the Malause Bridge.
(5) Carry on, pass the two pumping stations and continue along the D200. Pass the SMEP plant before reaching Malauze. Carry on to the bridge consisting of two metal arches. Here, the GR®65 joins the greenway.
(6) Continue along the greenway and the GR®65 to reach Lock No. 28 at Braguel.
(7) Continue on to the next footbridge, consisting of two concrete arches.
(8) Leave the riverside path to cross the bridge and continue along Impasse du Canal. Walk on to Avenue de Toulouse, in the village of Pommevic, then turn left at the stop sign. After about ten metres along the avenue, cross carefully and climb the few steps to follow the Prieuré promenade. Turn immediately right to reach Place Saint-Denis, behind the cemetery (toilets and drinking fountain on the square).
(9) Continue along Rue de l’Église, going against the one-way traffic. Pass between the church and the school and turn right to arrive in front of the town hall. Turn right onto Avenue de Bordeaux and continue to the roundabout.
(10) Turn left, following the signs for Espalais. Cross the Garonne’s side canal, then the Golfech canal, taking great care on the bridge as the pavement is narrow. Continue along the D113E1 until you reach Entreprise France Matériaux.
(11) Head right, keeping in the direction of Espalais. Walk across open ground, passing to the right of a large pond, then to the left of Lac de Pérouille, and through the small hamlets of Pérouille and Lagravette. Continue on until you reach the second junction. (Signs at regular intervals ask motorists to slow down for the Way of St James. Do take care nonetheless!).
(12) Turn right towards Espalais onto Avenue Monplaisir. Walk through the village of Espalais, staying on this avenue which continues as Rue du Barry. Pass the town hall, then walk past the church before reaching a roundabout.
(13) Turn left towards Auvillar on the D11, cross the Auvillar suspension bridge over the Garonne (Take care whilst crossing the bridge as the footpath is very narrow. Be careful!). Turn left after the bridge, towards Le Port.
(14) At the Y-junction, turn right onto Rue Saint-Catherine, pass the ruins of an old church and continue along Chemin du Peyrat to reach the small campsite Les Nids du Peyrat (A).

Worth a visit

Several small locks along the Garonne side canal. (13) Auvillar suspension bridge. (14) The town of Auvillar. The history of Auvillar is closely linked to that of the Garonne. The port is said to have originated from an old tollgate that existed as early as the beginning of the 13th century and allowed local viscounts to levy taxes on foreign goods passing through the village.

An easy route with very long tarmac sections. But it’s shaded along the canal

A lovely little stopover near the canal
Nothing out of the ordinary, and mostly tarmac all the way or almost, but quite peaceful and relaxing

A very manageable day’s walk, less challenging than ‘Moderate’ and pleasant along the canal. Please note that a route ‘recommended’ by a guide (MM DD) requires you to cross the D813 to join a dirt track, at the top of which you’ll find a fork: ‘Direct Route’ or ‘MM DD Route’, the latter being longer.
