Sea and land between Kermagen, Porz Ran and Chapelle Bouan

The first third of this hike takes place entirely along the coast, offering superb panoramic views. You then head inland, along pleasant paths or small roads with little traffic, to discover some beautiful heritage sites. You can extend this hike by exploring the Sillon de Talbert.

Description of the walk

Departure from Kermagen beach, located north of the village of Pleubian (signposted from the village). There are two parking options on site:
- In a car park set back from the beach, along the road leading to it (as shown on the map).
- In marked spaces along the coastal road (a little further along the route).

Red and white markings

(S/E) When you leave the car park, turn right onto the coastal road. Follow this road to the right, even when it becomes a dead end. Pass a series of boulders, continue along a path and leave a playground on your right. Go around the Rocher du Chabous on the right.

(1) At a three-way junction, turn left towards the Sillon de Talbert. Then walk along a pebble beach. Ignore a path on the right and follow a strip of pebbles along the beach. Ignore a narrow lane on the right. Then walk past a small house on the right and you will come to an intersection with the end of a small road (the Feu de Port la Chaîne building is on the right).

Red and white + yellowmarkings

(2) Continue straight ahead, passing a picnic table and an information sign. Climb a flight of steps and continue along the coastal path. Go down a few steps and continue towards Sillon de Talbert. Walk along the fern-lined coastal path for a long time (beautiful views of the sea and the neighbouring islands). After a shaded descent, you will arrive at a pebble beach. Walk along the beach.

(3) When the pebbles give way to sand, turn right onto a path that climbs uphill. You will come to a road; follow it to the left for about 20 metres and then turn left onto a path. Pass a small car park on your right and continue along the coastal path that descends. Keep to the left, walking alongside a hedge that offers views of the sea. Go down a flight of steps and you will reach a junction with the end of a small road.

(4) Go up the steps opposite and note a small menhir immediately on your right. Continue along the coastal path, ignoring the paths on your right. After the first houses, go down a flight of steps.

Red and white markings

(5) First turn left then right to take a sandy path that runs along Porz Ran beach (do not climb the steps opposite). Cross the end of a road, leave a car park on your right and continue along a sandy path. Walk past a restaurant and you will soon come to a crossroads (access to the Sillon de Talbert, information sign).

(6) There are two options here:
- For more information on the Sillon de Talbert, see the practical information section.
- Otherwise, as shown on the map, follow a small road opposite towards the Maison du Sillon. Ignore the turnings on the left and turn left opposite the house to take a dead-end road, the Grève du Sillon. Go through a wooden gate and continue along a track. Go through a second wooden gate.

No signposts

(7) On the other side, turn right into a narrow lane between two low walls and climb gently. At the end, turn left and ignore a dead end on the right. At the T-junction, cross a larger road at the pedestrian crossing on the left and turn left to follow the road on the right-hand pavement. Then take the first right, Rue de Lézandini. At the T-junction, follow Rue des Goélettes to the left.

Red and yellowmarkings

(8) At the end of the tarmac, take the second path on the right (the widest) and rejoin the GR®34. At the fork that appears shortly after, turn right onto a shaded path. This will take you to a small road, which you should follow as it continues slightly uphill.

Red and white markings

(9) Just after the Kervillien farm, turn left with the road (ignore the two paths on the right). At the T-junction, go right (on the left, you will see the sea and the Île de Bréhat). Ignore a track coming from the left and you will soon come to another intersection.

No signposts

(10) Leave the road and take a stony track climbing up to the right. After about 50 metres, at a fork not marked on IGN maps, turn left onto a flat grassy path. Stay on this pleasant, shaded path, following a fence on your left in places. At the end of the path, continue along a small road.

(11) At the T-junction, turn left (ignore a yellow arrow indicating a right turn). Take the first right, a dead-end road towards Trajou Meur.

Yellowsignpost

(12) When the road turns left towards a house, take a path on the right. Soon turn left with the path and, at the intersection that appears shortly after, take a path on the right between two fields. After a good hundred metres, turn right with this path.

(13) Shortly afterwards, turn right onto a shaded path towards Chapelle Bouan. Pass a fountain on your right and you will reach the chapel.

(14) Retrace your steps.

(13) Follow the main path to the right.

No signposts

Come out onto a small road and follow it to the left (ignore the yellow signpost on the right). At the three-way junction, turn left. Cross the hamlet of Volot and, after No. 6, turn left onto a track.

Mountain bike sign

(15) At the first intersection, continue straight ahead. At a fork, turn right onto a grassy path, leave an isolated house on your left and descend gently. Return to the track you left earlier and follow it to the right (old wash house on the right).

No signposts

(16) At the T-junction, take a small road on the left. This will come out onto another road; follow it straight ahead (ignore a yellow arrow indicating a left turn). Continue straight ahead, passing a chapel on the left and then a wayside cross on the right, at the corner of Rue de la Butte.

(17) Continue straight ahead on Rue de Saint-Cyr and note another wayside cross on the left. At the stop sign, cross the D20 (be careful, there is no protected crossing here) and follow it to the left (bus shelter) on the wide pavement on the right. Before the Saint-Antoine exit sign, take the first right towards Kermagen beach. Go slightly uphill and pass the Pleubian exit sign.

Mountain bike signposting

(18) Then take the first road on the right. When this turns right towards the entrance to a campsite, take a track slightly to the left and descend gently. Then turn left at the corner of a house. Ignore a path on the right, go straight ahead and climb gently up a sunken lane.

Mountain bike signposting + yellow markings

(19) Come out onto a small road with worn tarmac and follow it to the right. After No. 12, continue along a path. Ignore a vague start on the left, turn right between two low walls and descend gently.

Yellow markings

At the next crossroads, turn right.

(1) At a three-way junction taken at the start of the hike, turn left towards Tréguier and descend. Then turn left again and follow the Kermagen beach. Go straight ahead and, at the end of the path, continue along the coastal road. If you have not parked along this road, take the first left to return to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

In dry weather, good sports shoes are suitable for this route. In wet weather, wear hiking boots.

No drinking water available along the route. Restaurant in (6).

If you are sensitive to the difference in landscape between high tide and low tide, check the tide times in advance to choose the best time to undertake this hike.

Further exploration of the Sillon de Talbert:
At the point (6), turn left onto a sandy path lined with ropes and follow the "Le Sillon de Talbert" hike from its starting point (1). Allow between three and six additional kilometres depending on where you turn back on the channel. For this additional section, it is essential to take the tide times into account (see the practical information for the hike in question).

Useful detailed map (at least the one accompanying this description).

In the nearby area

- Superb views of the sea and neighbouring islands between (S/E) and (6), between (8) and (10) and between (19) and (1).
- Bouan Chapel (14). Although this 17th-century chapel is nothing special in itself, its setting and the path leading to it are very pleasant.
- Chapel and calvaries near (17).

Those who enjoy the strong, salty smell of seaweed will want to start this walk at low tide; others, who find the endless landscapes of the beaches disconcerting, will prefer to walk at high tide. This walk illustrates the Côtes-d'Armor logo, all green, all blue, with a long coastal route lined with reed beds, maritime marshes and old stone walls, all the way to the Sillon de Talbert. the landward part of the return journey is along a short stretch of tarmac, numerous farm tracks, a few footpaths and sunken lanes, crossing vegetable fields, illustrating the deep, wild nature of the commune of Pleubian at the very end of its peninsula, divided between maritime and agricultural activities. A beautiful walk at the end of the world.
