Marmites du Diable, Crête de l’Aup and Gorges d’Agnielles

A lovely circular route alternating between gorges and peaks above the Buëch: an ascent through the Gorge des Marmites du Diable, a section along the Crête du Moure de l’Aigle and de l’Aup, and a return via a path running along the cliff ledge above the Gorges d’Agnielles.
The walk is classified as difficult due to a few fords and tricky (but well-maintained) sections on the Marmites du Diable trail.

Description of the walk

Start from the Marmites du Diable car park: on the D1075, 400 m past La Faurie towards Aspres-sur-Buëch and just before a bridge over the Torrent de Durbonas, a track branches off to the left, running alongside the torrent. The car park is at the end of this track.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the path signposted “Marmites du Diable” (yellow markings) which heads into the gorge. Follow this path all the way up the gorge, crossing the stream several times. At the top of the gorge, the path turns left and joins a wide track.

(1) Turn right onto this track and follow it until you reach a hairpin bend to the left (elevation 1183).

(2) Continue straight on along another path (still marked in yellow). Follow this path, ignoring other tracks branching off to the left, and climb gradually until you reach the ridge.

(3) Then leave the marked trail and turn right onto a path that runs along the entire ridge. Cross the summits of the Moure de l’Aigle (elevation 1551) and the Aup in succession. After the Aup (elevation 1623), the path turns into a track that descends straight down, staying close to the ridge. Further on, the track turns at a right angle to the right, at a sheep pen.

(4) Leave the track and continue straight on, following the edge of the pen. This section is off the beaten track, but the terrain presents no difficulty (a gentle slope of grass and rocks). When the pen ends, continue straight on until you come to a path. You can’t miss it, as if you carried on a few metres further, you’d reach the edge of the Gorges d’Agnielles cliff.

(5) Take the path on the left until you reach the next junction (elevation 1173).

(6) Turn right, then right again, and carry on until you reach the hamlet of Agnielles.

(7) Turn sharply right onto a wide track (which is the access road to the hamlet by car). Continue to the entrance of a rocky cirque, where a signposted path (GRP®) branches off to the right.

(8) Follow this path, which climbs gradually through the rocks and continues along a ledge above the cliffs of the Gorges d’Agnielles. Stay on this signposted path, which after a while moves away from the gorges and crosses several tracks in succession, until it joins a wide track that descends to the hamlet of La Valette on the D1075.

(9) Cross the road (caution: busy road), then pass under the railway line and turn immediately right onto a track that runs alongside the railway line. Continue to the next junction.

(10) Turn right and cross the railway line and the D1075 again (caution: busy road) to reach, opposite, the track leading to the Marmites du Diable car park (S/E).

Notes

  • The walk is more scenic if you do it when the streams are full of water!
  • The Marmites du Diable trail features several fords, which can be tricky to cross without getting your feet wet if the water level is high and/or if you’re not comfortable with this sort of crossing. In that case, be prepared to take your shoes off!
  • If you prefer to walk at the bottom of the gorge rather than along the balcony path, an alternative route is available by continuing along the track to the point (8) and then heading up a path on the right just before joining the D1075.

We set off on a lovely day; the walk began pleasantly along a stream, before moving onto the ridge, which is more exposed when it’s hot.

Lack of signposting after the Col de l’Aups (the guidebook mentions following the fence of a sheep pen, but there is no sheep pen, so it’s very difficult to find the path leading back down to the hamlet of Agnielles
Otherwise, a magnificent hike 👍

A magnificent and very varied route. We got a bit lost on the ridge on the way up to L’Aulp because the trail doesn’t follow the path, but if you head straight up, you’ll find your way. To avoid crossing the road and the long track back to the car park at point 9, we took a path on the right that climbs up the hill; this leads onto a track that takes us back to the car park much more directly.

A very interesting hike despite one major disappointment: the title mentions the Agnielles Gorges, but the route never actually takes you to the water's edge (we should have read the description more carefully!). This is frustrating, especially as there is now a trail that allows you to really look down over the water... And to pass through magical places (caves, etc.). We should have made a detour at the end and not taken the GR trail, which overlooks the gorges and offers a wonderful panorama. A loop to plan without the marmites du diable, but starting from the car park for the via ferrata near the developed part of the gorges.
To follow the route, we missed the path to the Col d'Aup (point 3) and joined a path after the ridges, in the forest, signposted Agnielles. We picked up the route again at point 6...
A little tip: the car park for the marmites du diable is 1 km from the road... Parking at the start of the track allows you to walk this kilometre when everyone is fresh and to "warm up" before tackling the climb along the marmites... And above all, it means you don't have to walk that kilometre on the way back in the heat of summer, when you've already covered almost 15 km!

The route was poorly marked halfway through the hike. We covered 16 km and climbed 1,060 metres.
