Mandalle and Zigorriaga from Ibardin

This is a beautiful and fairly short hike, suitable for families (only the start is a little steep), offering superb views of the region's iconic peaks such as La Rhune and Les Trois Couronnes, as well as the Pyrenees mountain range in the distance and the coast.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is located in the car park in front of the Elizalde restaurant. To get there, see the "Practical information" section.

(S/E) From the car park, take the smallest stone path in front of you, which leads to the large pylon. This is theGR®10. The climb at the start is a little steep.

(1) This is the starting point of the circular loop. Leave the wide path and turn left. A little further on, leave the path again and head to the right. Then, at the top of the hill, you will pass the R10 boundary marker. You will then arrive at the summit of Manddale (or Manttale), marked by a triangulation point and the R9 boundary marker.

(2) You are now at an altitude of 574 m. This is also a historic site with traces of the Redoute de la Baïonnette. Continue straight ahead, but this time downhill. You will come to a large cairn.

(3) We will then continue straight ahead, making a round trip to climb Zigorriaga (549 m), where boundary marker R8 is located. On the way down from Zigorriaga, we will use the large cairn as a landmark.

(3) Once there, turn left onto a small path that will take you back to Bizkartzu on theGR®10.

(4) Follow it to the right towards the east to return to the starting point of the circular route a little further on.

(1) Then retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

How to get to the start by car:
From Ciboure, head towards Urrugne on the D810.

Turn right to climb up to the Col d'Ibardin.
Once you reach the pass, turn left towards the ventas and continue straight up to the last venta, the highest one (after the road ends), which is the Elizalde venta-restaurant.
Park in the car park in front of the venta.

Worth a visit

La Redoute du Zigzag is a military fortification consisting of a parapet (often a large mound of earth) protected by a moat.
Many battles against the Spanish in 1793/1794 and then against the English with Marshal Soult in 1813 took place here.
It owes its name to a famous zigzag charge by the French against the Spanish.
The remains of the redoubt are often hidden by ferns and shrubs. Its shape is clearly visible, especially from the sky.

A beautiful ridge walk, rounded off with the ascent of Xodolkogaina.
As I am also a contributor to the website, I made a video with the names of the peaks, showing the route and describing the atmosphere of our hike.
It's here: https://youtu.be/BnDV2R8KMjU?si=aUEq0KEY...

A very beautiful walk.
We saw lots of horses, cows and vultures.
To avoid the steep section at the start, we took the path on the right from the car park and then took the hairpin bend to get back on the trail.
Be sure to bring something to cover up with, as fog and cold sea winds can quickly roll in, as was the case for us, even in summer.
But the route is beautiful and pleasant, and I would definitely recommend it.
