Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is the car park in front of the Elizalde restaurant in Ibardin. For directions, see the “Practical Information” section.

(S/E) From the car park, take the smallest stone path opposite (there is a low, round wooden post marked "Benta Elizalde Ibardin Alt. 410 m" at the foot of the path) and head towards the large pylon at the top (GR®10). The climb at the start is a bit steep.

(1) Leave the wide path and turn left. A little further on, leave the path at a circle of stones and head to the right. At the top of the hill, pass the R10 boundary marker and then reach the summit of Manddale (or Manttale), marked by a triangulation point and the R9 boundary marker at an altitude of 574 m. It is also a historic site with traces of the Redoute de la Baïonnette.

(2) Continue straight down the path. Pass a large cairn and continue straight on to climb Zigorriaga (549 m), marked by boundary marker R8.

(3) Continue straight on, this time downhill, and pass the R7 boundary marker.

(4) At the bottom of the descent, turn right onto the small dirt track, heading due north, and head for the Col des Joncs.

(5) Turn right to join theGR®10which, after a steep climb, arrives at the starting point of the circular route.

(1) Continue straight on to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

How to get to the start by car: from Ciboure, head towards Urrugne on the D810. At Urrugne, at the large roundabout, turn left and take the exit marked ‘Col d’Ibardin’. Follow the D4, then turn right onto the D404 and drive up to the Col d’Ibardin. At the pass, turn right towards the ventas and drive up, continuing straight on until you reach the last venta, the highest one (beyond which the road ends), namely the Elizalde venta-restaurant. Park in the car park in front of the venta.

Worth a visit

The Redoute de la Zigzag is a military fortification consisting of a parapet (often a large earthen mound) protected by a ditch.
Numerous battles against the Spanish in 1793–1794 and later against the British under Marshal Soult in 1813 took place here. It owes its name to a famous zigzag charge by the French against the Spanish.
The remains of the Redoute are often hidden by ferns and shrubs. Its shape is clearly visible, especially from the air.
A few metres before reaching the summit of Mandalle, you descend into a ditch; this is where the Redoute begins. Then, as you descend from the summit, a few metres further on, you descend into another ditch; this is where the Redoute ends.

A lovely walk. It’s a bit tricky to find the start, as three paths lead off from the same spot and you need to take the small one in the middle.
