Logroño: a city rich in history and traditions

At the crossroads of the Camino de Santiago, Logroño is crossed by the River Ebro, spanned by two bridges connecting it to Navarre and Álava. Logroño seems a vibrant city that carefully preserves an old town shaped by the Way of St James and the culture and production of wine. It is a very pleasant city to stroll around, especially in the evening, to enjoy tapas in its famous bar district.
I visited this city during the fifty-first stage of my Camino de Santiago.

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the campsite, head left and then turn right to walk along La Playa Park. At the left-hand bend, turn right after the restaurant, then turn left onto Chemin Fermín Manso de Zúñiga to walk alongside the Ebro on your right. Go under the Pont de Hierro (Iron Bridge) and continue along the river until you reach the Casa de las Ciencias Museum. Turn left immediately after the museum, then right to reach a roundabout.

(1) Head right to cross the Pont de Piedra. At the roundabout, take the4th exit, towards the city centre. Pass between a hotel and a wellness centre, then turn left into Rue Marqués de San Nicolás. Continue to the Church of Santa María de Palacio.

(2) Turn left into Callejón Palacio, going against the one-way flow. At the end of this street, turn left into Calle Herrerías, then right into Calle San Bartolomé. You will arrive in front of the Church of San Bartolomé.

(3) Continue south along Calle San Bartolomé, then turn right into Calle Caballería, going against the one-way traffic. Continue along the street to reach Plaza del Mercado, in front of Santa María de la Redonda Cathedral.

(4) After walking around the square and visiting the cathedral, head down Calle Portales, keeping the monument on your left. Pass under an archway in front of the General Directorate of Culture building. Turn right and cross Calle Muro del Carmen carefully at the pedestrian crossing. You will arrive in the grounds of a secondary school. Walk through the grounds to the Fuente de los Niños.

(5) Continue round the school on your right. Pass the sculpture of the Bust of Doctor Castroviejo, then the Sagasta Fountain, before returning to Rue Muro del Carmen. Cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing and head left; after crossing Rue Muro de Francisco de la Muta, you will arrive at Espolón Park. Enter the park, walk past the amphitheatre, then stroll amongst the pretty flowerbeds before arriving at the Monument to General Espartero.

(6) Continue through the park and exit to the west onto Avenida de La Rioja. Head north, cross the road carefully and continue straight ahead along Avenida de La Rioja. Pass through a small alley and turn left into Calle Hermanos Moroy. Turn right after the pharmacy onto Calle Capitán Gallarza, then left into Calle San Agustín. These streets, which seem quiet during the day, are very lively in the evening. Continue along this street, passing the Museo de La Rioja (Local History Museum). At the end of the street, turn left, then right onto Calle Siervas de Jesús. You will arrive at Avenida Portugual. Turn right to reach the roundabout at the Los Riojanos Ilustres Fountain.

(7) Leave the roundabout by turning right onto Calle Benemérito Cuerpo de la Guardia Civil. At the end of the street, turn right onto Calle Marqués de Murrieta and continue to the Murrieta Fountain roundabout. Take the second exit opposite onto Calle Portales. Continue to Plaza Escuelas Trevijano, where you will find the sculpture Los Marchosos. Turn left to reach the Muralla del Revellín.

(8) After visiting the site, continue north, then turn right onto Calle del Norte. Walk along the pavement, then turn right at the square. Continue along Callejón Excuevas and turn right at the first street to arrive in front of the Church of Santiago el Real.

(9) After visiting the church, wander at your leisure through the narrow streets of the old town, making your way to the roundabout opposite the Piedra Bridge.

(10) Turn left, cross carefully at the pedestrian crossing and take the steps on the left of the bridge to go down into Ebro Park. Head west, then turn right as soon as you see the large footbridge crossing the Ebro. Cross the footbridge and, at the end of it, turn left. Walk along the edge of La Playa Park on your left, then turn left to reach the campsite entrance (S/E).

Notes

The town seems quiet during the day, with very few people on the streets. However, from 6 pm onwards, the narrow streets of the old town come to life. The tapas bars fill up and there is a great atmosphere in the streets.
