Les Vignes - Mas-Saint-Chély

Thisfourth stage of the Tour du Causse Méjean leaves the Gorges du Tarn to climb back up onto the Causse Méjean and cover nearly half of its northern section. After a steep climb to the hamlet of La Caxe, the walker first passes through wooded areas and fields before reaching more open terrain beyond Montignac. A detour via the Roc des Hourtous, with its breathtaking views of the Gorges du Tarn and the vultures, is one of the highlights of the stage.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Clockwise tour of the Causse Méjean starting from Meyrueis

Description of the walk

Start from the Tarn bridge in the village of Les Vignes on the D907bis. Plenty of parking available.

GRP® Tour du Causse Méjean signposting

(S) Cross the Tarn bridge and immediately afterwards, take the road on the left heading north-east towards Saint-Préjet and Le Ménial. Arrive at Le Ménial.

(1) Continue along the track that follows the road past the last houses in the hamlet. After a gentle 500m climb, the track becomes a path. Just over 100m after a hairpin bend to the right, as you enter the Ravin de Lubagne, watch out for an unmarked fork.
Turn right to reach the bottom of the ravine, then after a sharp left-hand bend, climb up the opposite side to a fork at the hamlet of Roque Sourde.

(2) Turn right. After a climb, turn north-east and begin an ascent via a series of tight hairpin bends to the hamlet of La Caxe. Cross the hamlet until you reach the road and the junction of paths.

(3) Take the path opposite. Walk for 300 m, and at the fork, take the path on the right, which leads further on to a main track.

(4) Follow it to the left for about 50 metres, then take a path on the right. At the next crossroads, head straight on along the wide, carriageable track and continue to a fork at a place called Les Combets.

(5) Pass theGRP® alternative route on your right and continue left to reach a Y-junction at the Bouillère signpost.

(6) Turn left to reach the Roc des Hourtous quickly. Take the opportunity to admire the view.

(7) Return to the junction at the Bouillère signpost.

(6) Continue straight ahead and you’ll soon reach the hamlet of Rieisse.

(8) Take thesecond road on the right, then the path on the right just before the bread oven. You’ll come to a fork. Keep left to stay on theGRP® and reach the Col de Rieisse.

(9) Continue along the path on the left and gradually begin an easy descent. Walk along the cliffs above the Gorges du Tarn, before reaching the hamlet of Rouveret.

(10) Turn into the street on the left. After 50 m, the tarmac gives way to a track and then a path. Reach a fork (marked by a cross), keep right to reach the White Cross crossroads.

(11) Continue along the road opposite towards Montignac. Reach the hamlet, walk through it from one end to the other, then at the last houses, take the path that follows the road. You will come to another fork.

(12) Continue along the path on the right. After a gentle climb, and through increasingly barren countryside, you will reach Anilhac at a crossroads.

(13) Take the road opposite heading due east, then keep to the right. The road becomes a wide track leading onto the D986. Cross it and continue along the wide track opposite. Further on, pass a path on the left, and at the next fork, turn right again. Head up the valley towards Mas-Saint-Chely, ignoring all tracks and paths coming from the left until you reach the junction at Mas-Saint-Chely.

(14) Turn left to reach the village, Chemin de Saint-Côme (E).
