Description of the walk

Park in the peat bog car park. To get there, see the description in the Practical Information section.

(S/E) From the car park, go through the wooden gate near the information boards. Walk around the peat bog on the wooden walkway (350 m). You will return to the car park.

(S/E) Head back up towards the hamlet of Lac (Baraban path) to the south-east. Pass the hamlet, staying parallel to the rose gardens and the pond. After a hairpin bend to the left, climb slightly.

(1) Take a grassy path on the left (follow the yellow markings for route no. 2). This will take you to a tunnel under a railway line.

(2) Continue straight ahead and after a pond (sometimes dry), turn left to reach a second tunnel under the railway line.

(3) Go through the tunnel, turn left and then immediately right. Shortly afterwards, walk along the motorway and cross the bridge over it. Once you have crossed the bridge, take the first street on the left, then, at the fork that appears shortly afterwards, take the left-hand branch. When you reach a T-junction, turn left.

(4) Pass under the motorway and immediately turn right. At the first fork at the top of the hill, turn right (yellow markings), then at the next fork, turn left (again, yellow markings). At a T-junction, turn left again, then very quickly leave the yellow owl markings No. 2 and turn right onto a gravel path that climbs up the hill.
(Alternatively, turn left at elevation 517: you will quickly return to the landmark and your vehicle without seeing the educational pond or the lake). Until you reach the violets, the markings are limited to a yellow line.
Continue until you reach a large sign indicating the presence of an educational pond. Take the time to observe it.

(5) Continue along the path. When you reach the sign for "Les Violettes-565m", turn left. At the first fork, turn left again towards the white markers for the underground oil pipeline. Your path will turn 90° and lead you to the D51b (there are no more markings).

(6) Take the departmental road on the left for 500m. Be careful, as vehicles drive quite fast. Follow the rules for pedestrians: as far as possible, walk on the left-hand side of the road, facing the cars, in single file. At the waste collection centre, follow the road on the left. Shortly afterwards, turn left again onto the small road that goes downhill (signposted "Chabons 3km"). When your small road is about to turn right, take a moment to admire the lake at the bottom of the valley.

(7) Then take the small path that descends to the left. When it rejoins your road, follow it to the left, ignoring the small road on the far left that leads to the hamlet of Les Violettes.

(8) At the bottom of the valley, turn right onto the Baraban path, which will quickly take you back to the Tourbières car park (S/E).

Notes

Although the lake and peat bogs are called "du Grand Lemps", the starting point is in the commune of Châbons, south of La Tour-du-Pin and north of Grand Lemps.

The most difficult part is reaching the starting point of the walk. From Châbons church, drive south (Rue de la Paix). Cross the D520 (Route de Grenoble), go over the footbridge above the railway line (no vehicles over 8 tonnes) and over the A48 motorway. When you reach a place called "Le Lac", turn right (Chemin de Barbaran). A little further on, on the left, you will find the peat bog car park.
Our route follows route No. 2, marked with yellow owls, for a good part of the way (it leaves the route between the markers (4) and (5)).

While this walk is certainly educational, it also has two drawbacks:
- the proximity of the A48 motorway between markers 3 and 4/5 (noise pollution)
- 500 metres along a secondary road after marker No. 6.

Not much to see, and the proximity to the motorway is unpleasant. Due to the time of year, the paths were littered with tall grass for much of the hike, which was inconvenient.

A wonderful discovery, the directions are precise. It's true that the motorway is very present, but some very bucolic spots make you forget this flaw. I really liked the graffiti in the two tunnels. A short, family-friendly walk that is very interesting in terms of the ponds that have been restored. Thank you to the author.

There are some very nice sections throughout this route. It starts with a quick but surprising tour of the peat bog, which leaves a lasting impression before you really set off on the walk. It's not too long, not too difficult and quite varied. It's true that the motorway is nearby and the noise from the cars can be annoying. But overall, it balances out and it's well worth doing.

Hike without any difficulty
At point 5, near the white markers on the oil pipeline, the path is not maintained (tall grass).

Hike tracked with GPX.

A very varied hike with some superb sections (path from 7) and one section on the road that is not particularly pleasant.

Hello, a slightly difficult start, but otherwise a very nice hike. At the start, always follow the green frog marked 2. At the exit of the bog, take the road on the right for at least 1 km before finding the dirt track. Enjoy your hike!

Hello,

The bog can be visited in 10 minutes.
We hesitated at point 4 about taking the stony path that climbs up the hill: it is on the right when you come to a wooded area. The first yellow mark is halfway up on the left.
The walk is pleasant and there is a small pond full of frogs basking in the sun.
