The banks of the Hérault, from Agde to Grau d'Agde

It is along the banks of the Hérault, which rises in Mont Aigoual in the heart of the Cévennes, that the charm works its magic.. The murmur of the river, the contrasting colours of the river, the sky and the flamboyant Château Laurens, the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne built from lava stones from the ancient volcano of Mont Saint-Loup, the charm of the boats sailing on the river... nothing will leave you indifferent.
You are here in Agde, "Agathé Tyché" or "Good Fortune". This ancient Greek city, founded in the 5th century BC and a thriving commercial port until the 18th century, will surprise you with its unusual houses built from black volcanic stone. To discover Le Grau d'Agde, a pretty fishing village, follow the Hérault river, which ends its course by joining the "beautiful blue sea" of the Mediterranean.

Description of the walk

Depart from the car park near the Moulin des Évêques.

(S/E) Start your tour by walking down the Hérault river and passing under the Pont des Maréchaux bridge. Walk past Saint-Étienne Cathedral and continue on to Place de la Marine.

(1) Continue straight along the Hérault river until you reach the Chapelle Dauret chapel.

(2) Then follow a long straight road and join the junction with Rue de l'Avocette near the Neptune campsite.

(3) Continue straight along Route du Grau until you reach the junction with Chemin de l'Agenouillade.

(4) Keep going straight ahead until you reach the beach.

(5) Continue straight ahead to reach the end of the pier.

(6) Retrace your steps.

(5) Turn right at the Front de Mer car park, then left onto Rue Jean Jaurès and continue to Place des Muriers

(7) Turn left until you reach the Hérault river. Turn right and walk along the river until you reach the Romarins campsite, which you passed on the way there.

(4) Turn right onto Chemin de l'Agenouillade. Continue straight ahead and join Place de l'Agenouillade, leaving the roundabout on your right. Walk along the square to visit Notre-Dame Church.

(8) With your back to the church, turn right to finish walking around the square, then go up the small path on the left: watch out for the small ditch at the end of the path. At the end, turn left and then go straight on to reach Boulevard du Saint-Christ.

(3) Finish your loop by turning right to walk along the Hérault one last time and follow the outward route in the opposite direction to return to the Moulin des Évêques car park (S/E).
