The 50 km of Agde

This route will allow you to discover or rediscover the riches of the Agde region (historic town centre, river, beaches, marinas, cliffs, Mont Saint Martin and Mont Saint Loup, Bagnas Nature Reserve, Canal du Midi, etc.).

It is not particularly difficult, apart from the distance, and can be covered in several days (see practical information).

Description of the walk

Departure from the Notre-Dame de l'Agenouillade car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head towards Place de l'Agenouillade (Place Notre-Dame du Grau).

(1) At the fountain, turn left and follow the cycle path (Chemin de l'Agenouillade) to the junction with Route du Grau.

(2) Cross the road and turn left towards the mouth of the river, passing by the fish market.

(3) Walk along the Hérault river to the Grau d'Agde lighthouse.

(4) From the lighthouse, head back towards Cap d'Agde, following the beach to the Centre Nautique.

(5) Continue to the harbour exit.

(6) Exit the car park and cross the Île des Loisirs, taking Avenue du Passeur Challiès to the second roundabout called "Tours de Saint Martin".

(7) Go around the roundabout on the left, cross the road and pass in front of the pharmacy.

(8) Take Rue Volvire de Brassac until the second intersection on the left.

(9) Turn left to follow Allée Bella Vista, running alongside the golf course on the cycle path on the right until you reach Domaine de Saint Martin.

(10) When you reach the estate, go around it via the path on your left (there is a drinking water tap).

(11) Then, at the intersection of paths, turn right through the pine forest. You will pass under the ropes course cables. You should see a white metal footbridge; head in that direction (and don't forget to enjoy the view!).

(12) When you leave the pine forest, take the path on the right, which will lead you to the footbridge. Once again, take a few moments to enjoy the view.

(13) Coming down from the footbridge, take the small path on the left.

(14) When you reach the bottom, turn right at the intersection.

(15) When you reach the road, turn right and walk a few metres, then cross as soon as you can.

(16) After crossing, follow Rue du Luxembourg for a few metres.

(17) Take the access road to Mont Saint-Loup on your right.

(18) Then follow the path on the left marked "le Sentier d'Émilie", which will take you around Mont Saint-Loup and offer you magnificent panoramic views. When you see the Cape, you will have the Tour des Anglais on your right.

(19) At this point, climb up to the semaphore.

(20) Descend via the road and arrive at the bottom, just before the start of the Sentier d'Émilie trail you took to climb up.

(21) Do not continue along the road, but take the dirt track on the left, which will take you to the pedestrian crossing. Cross the road.

(22) Take the "Promenade du Dr Tourreau" path to the tunnel.

(23) Go through the tunnel and continue to the archery range.

(24) Turn left. Follow the path to the entrance to Cap d'Agde, between the Palais des Congrès and the Casino, and follow the spiral path.

(25) Continue along the Rambla du Soleil, then cross Avenue des Sergents.

(26) At the intersection, continue along Rue du Tambour to the port at the Ferris wheel.

(27) Turn left and follow the quays to the technical area.

(28) Join the road via Allée des Tamaris.

(29) Turn right and follow Cours des Gentilhommes for 500 metres, then Avenue de la Jetée.

(30) Turn right onto Allée du Salicor to return to the quays, then left to the harbour master's office in the outer harbour.

(31) Head back towards the cliffs on your right.

(32) You can see the Rocher des 2 Frères and Fort Brescou in front of you. Follow the path along the coast to the pier and enjoy the view.

(33) At the pier, continue along the sea either via the beach or the path (more stable). You will arrive at a canal opposite the naturist village.

(34) Follow the canal, turning left towards the Etang de Lano, which you will cross.

(35) Continue via the Passage de Lano for 300 metres until you reach the junction with the cycle path.

(36) Turn right here and continue for about 100 metres. Then join Avenue de la Butte and Avenue du Bagnas.

(37) Take the path on the left just before the bend (be careful, not the first one just after the La Bergerie residence, but the next one, which runs alongside the road for a few metres before turning towards the nature reserve). Walk along the Bagnas nature reserve, where you can see flamingos and other birds.

(38) At the end of the path, turn left to return to Mont Saint-Loup until you reach the bridge and pass under the motorway.

(39) Take the path on the right, passing by the Notre Dame secondary school.

(40) At the roundabout, cross Route de Sète at the pedestrian crossing and turn left until you reach the junction with Chemin de François Fédou. Continue left towards Les Sept Fonts campsite. After passing the railway line and following the road that goes around the buildings, turn right (as if to enter the campsite). Cross over a stream and continue for a few metres. You are now at the Canal du Midi, at the Bagnas lock. Turn left and follow the canal along the Voie Verte to Route de Marseillan.

(41) Cross this road carefully , as cars can come up fast! Then continue past the Prades lock to the Hérault river.

(42) Continue along the path that runs alongside the river, pass under the railway line and take the time to admire one of the most beautiful views of the town of Agde (Laurens Castle, the cathedral, etc.) until you reach the Moulin des Évêques.

(43) Turn right, walk behind the mill and continue following the river along the car park.

(44) At the post office, cross Avenue du 8 Mai 1945 and turn right towards Crédit Agricole. In front of it, cross Rue Richelieu to reach the Promenade on the left, where you can see the ramparts. Walk up the Promenade to Place du 18 Juin 1940.

(45) Turn right onto Rue Jean Roger at the statue of the Republic and continue to the Maison du Cœur de Ville (former Maison Consulaire). On your right, pass under the arcades, walk up Rue Louis Bages, pass in front of Saint-Étienne Cathedral and continue on the street, which becomes Rue Honoré Muratet.

(46) At the end of the street, at the Tourist Office, turn left towards the river. Cross the road and walk up towards the Pont des Maréchaux bridge.

(47) Cross this bridge and you will reach a footbridge on your right. (A new footbridge is to be built to cross the Hérault. If it is already in use when you are hiking, turn left to join the path that runs alongside the Canalet to the round lock, then continue from point 55.)

(48) Take this to reach Château-Laurens (access to its gardens is free, so you can take a short detour). Follow the path directly to the left to walk along the Canalet to the round lock.

(49) Cross the small bridge and cross the Bessan road to return to the banks of the Canal du Midi (left bank). One of the first buildings on your left is the Hôtel Riquet. Following the canal, pass under the Pont Saint-Joseph (known as the 3-eyed bridge), the railway bridge and the Vias road, and further on, the expressway. Continue along the Canal du Midi.

(50) You will come to an intersection with another canal. Be careful not to cross the bridge at this point. Continue along the Canal du Midi until you reach the intersection (perpendicular) with the other canal and follow the latter, still on the left bank. This canal will take you to the sea, along the Verdisses nature reserve. You will reach the Clôt dam on your right. Cross a small bridge and continue along the canal for about 300 metres.

(51) Take the path on the left before you reach the beach. Follow this path along small ponds to the campsite and reach the first bunkers. Head to Tamarissière beach. Walk along it (you will see other bunkers) and go to the Tamarissière lighthouse. From the lighthouse, go up the river to the Pont des Maréchaux bridge in Agde, which you cross again.

(47) Just after the bridge, turn right onto Place Jean Jaurès and go down the steps to reach the quay. Walk along the river, passing the cathedral and the restaurants (you will see large rings fixed to the wall, which were used in the past to moor boats). Then pass Place de la Marine and one of the city gates, and the old public baths. Continue along the river and pass under the motorway bridge.

(52) Cross Boulevard du Saint-Christ and continue to the right along Avenue de Saint-Vincent until you reach Place de l'Agenouillade.

(1) Cross the square and the children's playground to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

  • This route is almost entirely flat, with the exception of Mont Saint-Loup, whose chosen circular route remains very accessible.
  • Several kilometres on sand.
  • If it has rained heavily, some sections may be muddy or even difficult to access (the section between the Prades lock and the Moulin des Évêques (we did the route after heavy flooding and had to wade through water).
  • There is a drinking water point at Domaine Saint Martin (10). Outside the summer season, there may not be any public toilets open except in Agde at the Belle Agathoise roundabout.
  • If you wish to
    • shorten this hike and return by bus, you will find maps and timetables for the Cap'Bus network here .
    • do the route over several days, there are many accommodation options, as Agde is very touristy. It may be a little more complicated outside the summer season.
      • When you arrive at the Palais des Congrès in Cap d'Agde, you will have covered 18 km. There are several hotels open all year round at this point.
      • The halfway point is at the entrance to Le Bagnas. There is the Hôtel la Bergerie, but it is only open from April to October. There are several accommodation options available on online rental sites. Please note that there is a naturist village right next door, and entry is restricted (avoid accommodation in this area).
      • You can also take a break in the town centre. By then, you will have covered about thirty kilometres. There are two hotels and private accommodation options.
      • In short, you have a choice of accommodation almost all along the route, especially if you are hiking between April and October. During this period, you can also add the numerous campsites (check the minimum stay requirements).

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:
