From the Canal du Midi to the mouth of the Hérault

There is a large, free multi-storey car park on the left as you approach Agde station.

(S/E) Turn your back on the station and walk down Avenue Victor Hugo to the roundabout.

(1) Go round the roundabout on the right , taking due care, to cross the footbridge over the Canalet towards Château Laurens, keeping the Hérault river on your right. Cross the historic garden and pass under the railway bridge.

(2) Take the path on the left, follow the railway line, then veer off to the right towards the Plaine de Jeux in Parc Belle Isle.

(3) At the Écluse Ronde d’Agde, cross the footbridge on the left and the D13 to continue along the Canal du Midi on the PR® route.

(4) Pass the turn-off to Saint-Joseph on your right and carry on along the canal. Navigate the left-hand bend, go under the railway line and then under the D912 bridge.

(5) Pass under the D612 bridge, cross the Ruisseau de l’Ardaillon at Grand Rudel and continue for about 500 m.

(6) Turn left onto the PR® path along the Canal du Clot and head to the tip.

(7) Cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de l’Ardaillou and carry on straight ahead, with the Étang du Clos de Vias on your left. Reach the junction by a blockhouse.

(8) Head right towards Tamarissière beach and walk along it to the car park. Cross the car park, keeping in the same direction, to reach the mouth of the Hérault.

(9) Turn left to walk alongside the river on Quai Théophile Cornu. Continue to the pumping station on the left.

(10) Turn slightly right to stay as close as possible to the Hérault, following the Route de la Tamarissière.

(11) Pass under the D612 bridge and turn immediately right to return to the banks of the Hérault. Join the Route de la Tamarissière again and continue along the river. You’ll come out onto Quai Commandant Réveille; keep going in the same direction.

(12) Keep to the right, continuing to follow the riverbank, and return to the roundabout where you started.

(1) Turn left onto Avenue Victor Hugo to return directly to the car park (S/E).

There are several places to eat at La Tamarissière.

Avoid this walk in very hot weather as there isn’t much shade.
