Description of the walk

From Saint-Laurent-du-Pont or Voreppe, take the Col de la Placette road (D520A). On the south side of the pass, reach the village of Pommiers-la-Placette and continue south towards the old church, where you turn left to go up to Préfanton. Park near the end of the surfaced road, taking care not to cause any local inconvenience.

(S/E) Continue opposite the end of the road along the path towards Voreppe and Chalais. After a 1/4-hour walk through the forest, you will reach a crossroads (hill 653) at the corner of which is a spur-shaped rock.

(1) Climb the forest track to the left, which becomes a footpath and, as it rises towards the cliffs, crosses several corridors where the path is washed away during thunderstorms (Take care in these passages!). After a short cable-stayed passage to cross the fall of a rocky bar, the path, which has come close to the Roize and the cliffs, makes a bend to the left.

(2) This bend marks the start of the climb up the slope, whose rocky passages are equipped with old ladders: the Passières. Between the three equipped passages, the path is steep and runs alongside the Charminelle cliff, requiring care.

At the top of the third equipped passage, the path levels out again towards the east, even descending a little and crossing a final projection by a fourth ladder, before continuing to cross to join the signposted path from Chalais to Charminelle via Les Gourhauts.

(3) Take this signposted path, which twists down to the right and fords the Ruisseau de Charminelle.

(4) It continues downhill until it fords the Roize.

(5) It then slopes up to the south-west on a grassy ridge, then through undergrowth to the Abri Forestier de la Roize.

(6) Do not take the forest road but the path heading west. Initially level, it then descends into the forest, passes by water wells and reaches Chalais near car park 2 of the belvedere (monastery nearby).

(7) Stay on the forest track that descends and crosses the road to Chalais, then head opposite and join the path under the power line until it crosses the road again.

(8) Cross the road and continue under the power line towards Bouzonnière, on a gentle slope, until you reach a crossroads (hill 704), again under the power line.

(9) Instead of continuing down towards Bouzonnière, which would require you to climb back up a little further, turn right at this point to follow a path that is inconspicuous at first but continues through the forest down a ridge to the Gerboudière crossroads (hill 617).

(10) Turn right to follow the level path, which after a few short ascents and descents, fords the Fond de Roize.

(11) Continue straight ahead to return to the level of the right bank of the Roize as far as the crossroads you passed on the outward journey.

(1) Follow the right path back to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

The passage between (2) and (3) is steep and partly exposed. The ladders, despite their age, are reassuring; it is the passages between the ladders that are the most exposed.

Dry ground is essential to avoid slipping and storms should be avoided for ford crossings.

Worth a visit

The Roize is a torrent whose catchment area is very ravine-like. It poses a threat to Voreppe and is the subject of major RTM (Restoration of Mountain Terrain) work.

As most of the route is in forest, there are few clear views, except along the cliff in the Passières or at Chalais, where you can visit the Monastery (biscuit factory) and see the Belvedere overlooking the Isère valley.

This loop was inspired by Pascal Bombardier's Topo, with a few variations.

The recommended car park is on private property. It is best to park near the old church.
After an easy forest trail, the approach to the ladders is very dangerous, crossing unstable scree where the trail has sometimes been washed away by fallen trees.
The ladders seem fairly secure and a (too) short lifeline has been added after the first one, but this is far from compensating for the acrobatic access between each ladder, where you often have to use your hands.
Afterwards, if you make it out alive and on your own two feet, you can enjoy a truly varied and at times breathtaking route!

This is a very technical route that requires extreme caution and should only be attempted in dry weather. Given the comments, I hesitated to do this hike, but I am very satisfied to have completed it without any major difficulties. The ascent route is not always very clear, so you need to be careful. After the summit, the hike is classic and well known

A very nice hike, but some of the sections between stages 1 and 3 are downright dangerous. You have to cross scree slopes without a flat area, and hope that the ground doesn't give way under your feet, otherwise you're bound to fall to your death.
We did it after 2 weeks of good weather, and it was a good choice: I think mud would have made the scree crossings impossible.

I strongly advise against this trail, which no longer seems practicable this year (2024).

Be careful, this hike is difficult to follow, the path is often poorly marked and hard to see.
What's more, with the many storms in recent years, many trees have fallen and the path is no longer practicable. The path is often very exposed and the old trees no longer hold the path. There's a lot of gravel on the path, which makes it very slippery. One person in our group suffered the consequences and slipped for about ten metres.

A great discovery of this unusual and demanding route on the 1st part up to the fords.

The starting point (marked car park) is not recommended, as it is on private property and the owner (a farmer) is not inclined to let you park there if you are not from the area. Choose a spot below the marked starting point (perhaps adding one or two km of walking to the itinerary).
The previous comments on the precautions to be taken before starting the first part of the route are confirmed. One section between points 1 and 2 is tricky due to a landslide that has swept away the path (take hiking poles with you to stabilise yourself). At point 2, be sure to follow the coloured markings (red, yellow or blue) to access the ladders. This is not recommended for people who do not wear hiking boots and suffer from vertigo. The ground is soft and stones can roll under your shoes.

I gave it an average rating because the route has become more than very difficult, due to the fact that the path, which is seldom used, has deteriorated a lot.
Some sections need to be revised, especially the crossings.
Only take people on this hike who are not afraid of heights and who are well equipped (hiking boots are not recommended).

A hike done twice, two years apart.

The Very Difficult rating is fully justified. The ladders and roped passages are easy, but the access path is very steep and crosses many scree slopes. The terrain is made up of stones that roll under foot, earth and pebbles, so shoes that grip well and poles are absolutely essential. There are several passages where you have to put your hands in and the path tends to collapse under your feet, so you need to be vigilant at all times.
This is a hike for people who are not afraid of heights and who are very sure-footed.
Apart from these warnings, it's a very nice walk, aerial and fun with the ladders. It's also a very seldom-visited route. It's guaranteed to be a lot of fun, and you'll also get a great view of Voreppe and the north of the Vercors during a small gap in the trees.

I recommend this hike, but you absolutely must approach it with the utmost caution.

An excellent route for those who are used to following Pascal Sombardier.
Thanks to the local hunters for their work on the ladders.
The return journey is a little long compared with the intensity of the first part, but fortunately the visit to the Abbey biscuit factory is most interesting for us gourmands ;-)

I've never been disappointed by Pascal Sombardier's courses!
It's true that it's not for everyone. A sure footed approach is more than necessary.
There are a few particular passages where you have to cross scree before the ladders. In very dry weather, it's all the more slippery.
We loved it! But we knew what to expect with this "Sombardier" worthy of the name.
A stop at the Abbey biscuit shop is a nice touch!
