The meandering Giffou river as it flows out of Réquista

Réquista is France’sleading sheep-farming canton. Here, the Lacaune ewe reigns supreme. It is from her milk that the famous Roquefort is made. And it is here, in Réquista, that the Société dairy is located, where the cheeses are produced before being sent to the cellars of Roquefort to be matured.
Every year, on thefirst weekend in June, the Sheep Festival is held: walks, meals, street entertainment, a dance… and more.

Description of the walk

Car park: under the market hall next to the post office, Boulevard des Vicomtes de Cadars, or in nearby car parks.
YellowPR® signposts

(S/E) Head towards Rue de l’Égalité and follow it to the left. Walk alongside the cemetery wall and continue straight on along a grassy path that descends towards Riou Sec (remains of an old washhouse built right on the stream).

(1) Turn right onto a small road; at the crossroads marked by a cross, pass the Ferme de la Boriette on your left. Continue to the right to reach the Ferme de Sonnac.

(2) 100 m after Sonnac, leave the road and continue along the path on the left. Walk through farmland, past the Serre farm, and emerge onto a path.

(3) Turn left and join the Route du Fonsal. Follow the road to the left for 30 metres, then turn right onto a sunken track.

(4) At the entrance to Poudac, take the small road on the left, towards the Fournet and Bel-Air farms (traditional farmhouses). After Bel-Air, the road becomes a farm track.

(5) After 500 m, at the 560-metre mark, turn right and head down towards a fir forest (viewpoint over the Giffou valley), towards the site of Réquista le Vieux. You’ll reach a four-way junction. A round trip is possible by turning right to reach the site of Réquista le Vieux.

(6) Continue the descent towards the Giffou. About 100 m further on, take care: let the wide path branch off to the right, and carry on straight ahead along the track which follows, more or less closely, the meandering course of the stream (follow the signposting carefully). Stay on the left bank (footbridge made of two posts).

(7) Take the path that climbs to the left into the forest, then turn right twice. Head back down to the Riou Sec (in Occitan, ‘dry stream’), walk alongside it, then cross it and change banks (ford). Continue through the woods until you emerge onto the road to Sonnac, near the old wash house.

(1) Follow the outward route in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Good evening, Julien 1983,

Thank you for your comment.
Regarding the signposting being too ‘discreet’ and the fallen trees on the path, I’ll pass on your comments to the team of signposters responsible for maintaining this walk.

I hope you enjoy many wonderful hikes with Visorando

Hello
Lack of signposting, crosses, left and right turns, too much tarmac; a path running parallel to the road to reach Bel Air; no signposting for 500 metres towards Bel Air – we’re a bit lost; trees to be cut down on the second half of the route
Review the signposting and cut down a few trees
