From Lincou to Brousse-Le-Château, following the river...

A very pleasant stroll, there and back along the banks of the River Tarn, connecting two charming villages: Lincou and Brousse-le-Château. The latter is listed among the "Most Beautiful Villages of France".

Description of the walk

Park in the square in Lincou (12170), at the bottom of the village.

(S/E) Leave the car park and follow the left bank of the Tarn. After leaving the village, the path passes the gardens and continues upstream.

(1) As it becomes impossible to continue along the riverbank, the path climbs a few metres to the level of the D200, which it follows for 50 m, before descending back down to the water’s edge.

(2) Pass the hamlet of La Figarède, situated slightly above the path (the name La Figarède comes from figs), and arrive at the Girbes Bridge picnic area (tables, water tap, children’s play area, grassy ‘beach’).

(3) Walk alongside the picnic area, continuing in the same direction. Go under the Girbes bridge and take the concrete track opposite.

(4) After Le Pestel and the Ruisseau d'Artigues, the concrete track turns into a dirt track.

(5) Ignore the small path branching off to the right (we’ll return this way) and keep left on the track, which climbs gradually. Turn left once, then right a second time. After the two hairpin bends, the track overlooks the Tarn like a balcony, offering beautiful views of the valley.

(6) Ignore the path branching off to the right (private) and stay on the gently ascending track. Join the D143 at a water tower. Magnificent views of Brousse-le-Château, built on a rocky ridge, come into view.

(7) Follow the D143 to the right for 500 m until you reach the first hairpin bend.

(8) Take the steps on the left and head down into the village (these steps avoid walking on the road, which is dangerous at this point due to the two hairpin bends).

(9) At the statue of the Virgin Mary, turn right at the hairpin bend and go under the bridge.

(10) Join a small path running alongside the Tarn. Note the flood gauges for the Tarn and, further on, the marks and deposits left by these floods. Continue to follow the Tarn to the crossroads taken on the way out.

(5) Retrace your steps along the outward route to return to the Lincou car park (S/E).

Notes

1 - This route, which runs alongside the River Tarn as close as possible to the water, is obviously strictly prohibited during periods of heavy rain and/or flooding.

2 - Drinking water and toilets:
- Pont de Girbes picnic area
- Brousse-le-Château

3 - You can, of course, do the full round trip along the Tarn, but the magnificent views of Brousse-le-Château from the (7) fully justify taking the circular route before reaching the village.

4 - The section of the path between Lincou and the Pont de Girbes, known as the "Sentier des pêcheurs" (Fishermen’s Path), was opened and is maintained by the AAPPMA de Réquista ( ApprovedAssociationfor Fishingand the Protectionof the Aquatic Environment).
Along this section of the trail, several information boards about fish species have been installed.
Thanks to the fishermen!

5 - Taking the time to take photos and admire the scenery, I completed this circular route in 3 hours.
- No signposting.

Worth a visit

Brousse-le-Château is a member of the association "Les Plus Beaux Villages de France".
Its medieval castle is a must-see.
Its church, oratory, characterful houses and Romanesque-style bridge make this medieval village an exceptional site.

Lincou: Gothic church; at the top of the village, a calvary offering a beautiful view over the village. Museum and art gallery at the Manor House.

Connac: 15th-century church. Sarcophagus under the church porch. Reused stone to the south of the village (base of a cross)

Lavabre: well-restored houses and a Templar barn.

All along the Tarn Valley , “La vallée des RespiRs” offers viewing platforms where you can pause, observe the river and contemplate the landscape.

In the field, there may be confusion between points 4 and 5:
... the cement track becomes a dirt road.
OK, we got lost on a path that matched description no. 5 in every way, except that we were climbing towards a hamlet much higher up
In my opinion, it should be clarified that you should continue a little further along the dirt track before the fork at point 5, which is indicated by a small yellow sign on the right by the river, and then turn left and head up to the castle
Thanks anyway to the hikers who marked the trail

A very pleasant, easy walk along the Tarn. The flower gardens along the Tarn are magnificent at this time of year.

A lovely walk along the banks of the Tarn, taking in these two beautiful villages. We really enjoyed it. The path is well maintained and the signposting is excellent. We met a few people in the afternoon, but there weren’t many around.

A lovely walk along the River Tarn on a hot day; three-quarters of the route is in the shade. Once we reached Brousse, we had a picnic in the shade by the water’s edge and took the opportunity to visit the château before setting off again. The village of Lincou is also very pretty. Thank you, Pyrène 12, for mapping out the route.
