Description of the walk

The village of Saint-Igest is located on the D184, which climbs towards Montclar from the Tarn Valley road (D902).

Park in the car park in the village, to the right of the D184.

(S/E) From the car park, turn right onto the D184 and follow it for about ten metres. Turn right onto a track leading to Le Mas. Continue left along the track that runs alongside the road and head towards Le Mazet.

(1) Continue along the road towards Sajac for 300 m.

(2) At a hairpin bend, turn left onto a track and then a road leading to La Graldié.

(3) After La Graldié, the road becomes a track. Continue to the access road for the water reservoir and the weather radar (large white sphere)

(4) If the access gate is open, take a short detour to get closer to the Puech de Montclar site. Commemorative plaque marking the inauguration of the radar. 360° viewpoint

(5) Retrace your steps and rejoin the La Contié road, which you should follow to the left.

(6) At the La Roque junction, go straight on along a path lined with a carved cross

(7) After 500 m, at a crossroads, take the path leading down to the left and begin the descent into the Tarn valley to the hamlet of Palaret.

(8) Above the hamlet, turn right onto a small path, cross the D184 and head down into the hamlet. After about a hundred metres, leave the track for a path that descends to the right into the woods and, after several hairpin bends, joins the D902 which runs alongside the Tarn on the opposite bank to Brousse-le-Château (very pretty views of Brousse-le-Château from the bridges).

(9) Cross the D902 and take the path to the left between the Tarn and the road. For a good kilometre, follow the route of what was intended to be a railway line. At the start of the 20th century, bridges and tunnels were built but the tracks were never laid. After La Rouquette, pass close to one of these tunnels.

(10) Cross the D902 and take the path on the other side of the road. Walking along a balcony-like path above the Tarn, head towards Saint-Igest (S/E).

Worth a visit

Saint-Igest: old wash house
Le Mazet: windows, doors and gates from the18th and19th centuries. Beautiful carved cross from 1749.
All along the route: some very beautiful stone crosses.
Puech de Montclar: water reservoir and weather radar. Built above the Puech water tower, at an altitude of 669 metres, this 4-metre-diameter radar antenna (wavelength 5.600 MHz, power 150 W) is protected by a radome (large white sphere). It has a theoretical range of over 250 km. Its purpose: to anticipate the risk of flooding in the region by identifying affected areas, particularly during Cévenol weather events.
Brousse-le-Château: one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its12th-century castle.

This route is actually about 11.5 km long and we completed it in 2 hours and 40 minutes. The path is shaded and pleasant. If you take the time to stop, there are some lovely views.
I was worried that the section along the Tarn would be on the road, but in fact there’s a path (marked by signposts) that runs below the road. Which is rather handy when you’ve got a dog!

More than just a hike, it’s a very varied and interesting walk; the Puech de Montclar, the views over the Tarn valley, the vista of Levezou and the Causses, with the Montagne Noire in the distance, the village of Brousse-le-Château (we naturally made a detour and regretted not having brought our swimsuits) and the isolated hamlets.
The end of the walk is a bit long to get from Brousse-le-Château to Saint-Igest, as the gentle, shaded climb lacks points of interest, unlike the rest of the walk,
