When you arrive in the village, park near the cooperative winery.
(S/E) Retrace your steps and turn left at the small square, at the water fountain, onto Rue le Grand Chemin. Continue along this road for about 1 km. At the end of the tarmac, continue straight ahead. Follow this path and turn left at an acute angle after 500 m to rejoin the road.
(1) Follow the road to the left until the next crossroads, where you turn right onto a path that crosses the vineyards.
(2) At the intersection, turn right and then immediately left onto the road, still in the vineyards.
(3) At the top of this vineyard, pass between two posts and take a small, barely visible path on the right that climbs steeply. Follow this path for about 3 km and admire the breathtaking scenery.
(4) Here you will find the "place aux herbes" (herb square)! This marks the end of the sharp limestone pavement and the beginning of greenery, and above all the end of the climb, where you can admire the entire Cévennes mountains on one side, the sea on the right and the foothills of the Montagne Noire. The path is not very visible, so you need to follow the GPS track carefully. Be careful when you reach elevation 796: turn right and follow the blue trail through the forest.
(5) As you pass, you will see a stone with a hole in it on your right, which has been pushed through a tree branch!
(6) You will arrive at a T-junction with a blue post at the top. Take the wide path on the left.
(7) Second "place aux herbes", a pleasant spot for a picnic if it's the right time of day. Continue along the path to the next T-junction.
(8) Turn left and continue for about 1 km. At the hairpin bend, turn left.
(9) Take theGRP® on the right for a round trip (20 mins) to the Peyre Martine viewpoint and a magnificent view of the village of Pégairolles-de Buèges.
(10) Return to the previous junction.
(9) Turn right and continue for about 200 m until you reach a fork. Be sure to take theGRP® on the left and continue through the woods on this path, which will take you back to the side of the mountain (the descent begins again on sharp limestone pavement) through the forest with magnificent views of Saint-Jean-de-Buèges and its large tower from time to time.
(11) Return to the road after the church and continue straight ahead. You will arrive at the entrance to the village, where you can admire the old stone houses and a very pretty bridge. Cross the bridge (or stop for a drink near it) before returning to your vehicle (S/E).
. The passage on the plateau is well marked between the cairns and blue markings. If you pay attention, the route is not complicated. The descent is long and really tires the legs. We appreciated finding the village bar open on 1 May for a refreshing beer
It made our lives a bit miserable, which was a shame because it's a really beautiful hike.
