To get to the start point, from the village of Saint-Jean-de-Buèges, take the D122 road towards the village of Pégairolles-de-Buèges. After 3 km, at the sign for ‘Source de la Buèges, Parking’, turn right, cross the bridge and park in the car park indicated.
(S/E) Leave the car park and head towards the road. Turn right at the telephone box, walk along the low wall and, at the end, turn right towards the cross. Continue along the stony path, following the yellow markings.
(1) Turn right, walk past the houses and through the hamlet of Le Méjanel. Turn right between the low wall and the house and walk past the cross. Do not then take the path on the right but carry on straight ahead.
(2) Keep to the right on the stony path and leave the markings behind. After 50 m, at the path on the left, continue to the right until you reach the 277-metre mark.
(3) Return to the yellow signposting. Leave the path, turn left and then, 20 m further on, turn right. Avoid the two paths on the right and, via a winding path, reach the Cirque de la Séranne.
(4) Take the path on the left, the GR®® 74, marked in white and red. Continue in a south-westerly direction, passing close to the Grotte La Susterragne. You will arrive at Mas Vieu.
(5) Carry on straight ahead on theGR®® 74, marked in white and red. The path becomes a track and winds round the hamlet.
(6) At the bend, turn left at the Larret signpost. Pass a series of bends and keep to the left, continuing uphill. Walk through the undergrowth of a fir forest, following the red and white markings at all times.
(7) At the 703-metre mark, carry on straight ahead. At the next junction, stay on the path on the right and, at the fork in the path, continue to the left, still following the same markings.
(8) At the three-way junction, keep left (south-west). At the next junction, turn left (south), still on theGR®®74. Continue to the Pas de Combe Belle.
(9) The track narrows to a path. Continue downwards through a series of hairpin bends until you reach Mas Aubert (a stopover lodge).
(10) Carry on straight ahead. You’ll soon reach the D122 road; follow it to the left, leaving theGR®® for aPR®® marked in yellow$. Ignore the path on the right and pass over the Col des Lavagnes.
(11) A few metres after a hairpin bend, leave the road and cross the ridge to continue along the wooded path, which is still marked in yellow. Follow the Combe des Tières and pass by a well. You’ll arrive at Font Basse.
(12) Keep to the left and follow the path (which becomes a stream when it rains), marked in yellow.
(13) At the fork in the road, turn right, leaving the yellow markings, and cross the stream. N.B. There is no other way to cross (you risk getting your feet wet during the rainy season). Join the track, pass the Mas de la Fenasse where the track becomes a road, and follow it to the junction with the D122.
(14) First turn left then right to cross this road (signposted ‘Source de la Buèges – Car Park’). Cross the bridge and head to the car park (S/E).
We need to reintroduce titmice to clean them up.
