Description of the walk

The starting point is on the D122, halfway between Causse-de-la-Selle and Saint-Jean-de-Buèges. A large car park awaits you just before the descent to Saint-Jean-de-Buèges.

(S/E) Take the track marked with yellowPR® signs. At the edge of the woods, you’ll reach a crossroads of paths.

(1) Leave the track and continue to the right along the path marked in yellow. After a gentle climb, you’ll reach a fork at the end of the climb.

(2) Turn right towards Pégairolles-de-Buèges. Walk downhill until you reach the plain and the crossroads at the source of the Buèges.

(3) Keep left, cross the road and continue on to reach the entrance to the village of Pégairolles-de-Buèges.

(4) Turn left and head towards Pégairolles-de-Buèges, following the signs for the Séranne Pontel route. Walk through the village and head towards the exit.

(5) Take the signposted path on the left. At the next Y-junction, keep to the right-hand branch. Then keep right onto the road and, a few hundred metres further on, you will come to a crossroads of paths.

(6) Keep to the right and set off along the path. Cross a track to reach a hairpin bend further on.

(7) Tackle a few tight hairpin bends here. Pass close to the Rocher de la Chandelle, then, via a left-hand circular loop, reach the junction ofthe GR®74and theGRP® Tour du Grand Pic Saint-Loup at the highest point of Mas Vieux.

(8) Take these to the right and descend slightly to reach a four-way junction at the entrance to the Cirque de la Séranne.

(9) Turn right along the ridge line, following theGRP® Tour du Grand Pic Saint-Loup to continue the ascent and reach Peyre Martine, the highest point of the hike.

(10) Return to theGRP® heading north-east and descend to the small pass, a four-way junction.

(11) Turn right onto a descent that is gentle at first but gradually descends towards Saint-Jean-de-Buèges via numerous tight hairpin bends. You will then reach a road just before the bottom of the descent.

(12) Continue along the road to the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Buèges. Then leave the village via the southern exit.

(13) Turn right, then cross the Buèges at the bridge. Walk past the football ground and you’ll reach a junction by the tennis courts.

(14) Take the path at the back of the courts to climb up to the D122 road.

(15) Cross it and take the path opposite to reach the D122 car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(3) From here, you can reach the source of the Buèges. This resurgence is a magical place: in a rocky setting, pure, crystal-clear water miraculously gushes forth from nowhere.
(10) Peyre Martine: beautiful view of the surrounding plain.

6 April 2024 at 10.10 am: Setting off from the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Knoll, we pass through a Way of the Cross featuring 14 stations depicting Jesus’s journey, before reaching the Calvary. A few more steps take us to the foot of a large statue of the Virgin Mary. The winding, tree-lined path then leads us past three antennas at the DFCI junction. After 3.5 km along this route, we reach the highest point of the massif, La Montagne de la Séranne (940 m). We’ve already covered almost a third of the circular route. Near Roc Blanc, there are several paragliding launch sites offering flights south or north into the Hérault Gorges. The path continues along the ridges for nearly a kilometre before beginning the real descent. Once at the bottom, the road is the only way to avoid entering private property. After 2 km on the D1, we find a forest track leading back up to the sanctuary.

A real treat – a good mix of elevation gain and distance. There are some great spots along the route that are well worth seeing. I highly recommend this hike.
Happy hiking
