The hills above Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne

A lovely circular route along quiet, tarmac-surfaced roads. Very close to Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, so you can round off your outing with a drink on a terrace!

Description of the walk

Park near the houses in the hamlet of Fleurieux, which was one of the two parishes of Châtillon-les-Dombes to which it was attached in 1790. Take care not to obstruct traffic.

(S/E) Head due north and pass the houses in La Pernette.

(1) Turn left, pass Champremont and follow the rows of trees at the Soupe nurseries (world-renowned). Cross the bridge over the Leat de Payon and reach the three-way junction at La Moussière.

(2) Turn left towards the village of L’Abergement-Clémencia, following the aptly named Route du Paradis. Pass the turn-off for Chamaudry on your right, then turn left to cross the hamlet of Les Pichoux d’en Bas and reach the wayside cross.

(3) In the centre of the cross, you’ll notice a heart pierced by a sword, a reference to the Gospel of Saint Luke in which Mary is told: “And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” Continue on to the hamlet of Les Pichoux d’en haut.

(4) On the left, you’ll see a farmhouse in the Bresse architectural style, topped by a remarkable Saracen-style chimney typical of the region. Carry on straight ahead until you reach a five-way crossroads at a place called La Genette.

(5) Turn left to head back towards Châtillon and continue due south, skirting the Bois de l’Ordre. Pass the Polain farm’s horse stud and head down to Vernisson.

(6) Pass the entrance to the nurseries on your left and carry on straight ahead. Once you reach the Fleurieux junction, turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Suitable for families with children who can walk well, aged 5–6 and over. Allow 2½ hours for this route.
The entire route is on roads and is suitable for pushchairs. This route allows you to avoid the muddy footpaths in bad weather. There are few cars, but do remain alert.

Worth a visit

Why not take the opportunity to buy some trees for your garden at the Soupe nurseries!
Pop over to the centre of the medieval town of Châtillon, just a stone’s throw away, with its flower-bedecked bridges.
Have a drink on a terrace near the Halles de Châtillon.

A short stroll to aid digestion; no problems along the way.
A tarmac road, but with very little traffic,
ideal in uncertain weather;
Best wishes to you all and happy cycling in 2023

A lovely walk on a weekday, though I did get a bit nervous when I came across a dog on its owner’s property – the gate had been left open… not very reassuring.
But that’s just part and parcel of being a walker.
