Access to the start: From Saint-Claude, head towards Cinquétral via the D67. Shortly after leaving the town, at the Pont du Diable on the D69, there is a small car park with around eight spaces where you can park right next to the start of the trail.
Please note: despite the significant safety improvements carried out in recent years, the route is still reserved for walkers wearing suitable footwear and in good physical condition. Certain sections may be daunting for those prone to vertigo. The information board at the start of the route details the safety recommendations and guidelines to be followed.
(S/E) Start behind the information board by taking the path that runs alongside the turbulent Torrent de l’Abîme. Very soon, you’ll reach the first footbridge, which takes you across the stream opposite the Grotte du Pendu. These new facilities, installed as part of the site’s reopening, provide safe access to this spectacular canyon whilst preserving its wild character.
(1) Begin a steep climb over rocky terrain, in places cluttered with roots. Several handrails make it easier to progress through the trickiest sections. Continue until you reach a signpost at the junction with a path coming from the right.
(2) Keep left towards the Trou de l’Abîme. Descend the stony path, pass the hydroelectric power station, then continue to the next signpost.
(3) Turn left and take the footbridge leading to the Trou de l’Abîme. This impressive resurgence marks one of the natural entrances to a vast underground network explored by cave divers. Admire the waters gushing from the base of the cliffs in a particularly spectacular setting.
(4) Continue along the path climbing up above the torrent. Caution: this section is narrow and can become very slippery, particularly after rain. Despite safety measures and the presence of handrails, the utmost caution is still advised. Continue along the single path that leads back to the car park along the right bank of the torrent (S/E).
