La Vouivre and Pissevieille waterfalls, circular tour

A circular hike above Saint-Claude that takes you to the Cascade de la Vouivre waterfall, the Belvédère de Cinquétral viewpoint offering superb views of the Bienne valley and the Haut-Jura, and finally the Cascade de Pissevieille waterfall. It is best to do this hike when the snow has melted or after rain to get the most out of the waterfalls, but in this case, the use of walking poles is strongly recommended. Similarly, the climb to the Belvédère de Cinquétral is reserved for experienced walkers.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the bend in the road leading down to Saint-Claude (please note: there are only 2-3 parking spaces available), at the entrance to the private road leading to the Diesle farm.

(S/E) Take the Diesles road almost to the entrance of the property. The path is marked in yellow to the point (4) and follows a black trail route.

(1) Descend to the left, taking the path that leads to the La Vouivre waterfall. Cross the Torrent de la Blénière at the waterfall and continue towards the Belvédère de Cinquétral.

(2) Turn right and begin the steep climb to the Belvédère de Cinquétral.

(3) Enjoy the view over the Bienne valley and the peaks of the Haut-Jura, then continue climbing towards the antennas.

(4) Turn left and take the path that descends steadily towards the hamlet of Noire Combe.

(5) Turn right and take the hamlet's main street.

(6) Take the road that climbs to the right and quickly turns into a carriageway.

(7) Pass a path on the left, which you will take on the way back, and continue to the top of the Pissevieille waterfall.

(8) Retrace your steps for about a hundred metres.

(7) Take the path you saw on the way up. The fork may be difficult to find in autumn with the leaves, but the path is very well marked after about 50 metres. Descend steeply to the bottom of the waterfall.

(9) Turn right and walk to the bottom of the waterfall and back, then continue downhill to the road.

(10) Turn left and take the road that climbs back up towards Noire Combe.

(6) At the hamlet, pass the fork that leads to the Pissevieille waterfall and continue straight on along the main road, then along a track.

(5) Continue straight ahead on a path that is sometimes poorly marked. Follow the double yellow markings (not very visible) and, above all, the black trail.

(11) Turn left onto the path that climbs up to the Cascade de la Vouivre waterfall.

(2) At the waterfall, retrace your steps back to the car park (S/E).

A superb hike, offering plenty of variety in terms of elevation gain (the steep climb up to the Belvédère is quite challenging), views and scenery... The one hike you simply must do! Thanks for the route ☺️
