The area around Luçay-le-Mâle and its castle

This walk first takes you to the Étang de la Foulquetière. You then cross through magnificent woodland before returning to Luçay-le-Mâle via paths and small country lanes. You will then discover its heritage, notably its (private) château. Some sections follow the route of the Benjamin Rabier discovery trail.

Description of the walk

Park at the town hall in Luçay-le-Mâle.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, follow the yellow markings opposite, skirting the fire station on the left and taking a path down to a footbridge over the Ruisseau du Mondon. Walk straight up for 300 m.

(1) Turn left onto the grassy path and continue straight on to Chaud Buisson, following the yellow-red markings ofthe ValençayGRP®® trail, which is also the Benjamin Rabier trail. At the road junction, take the path on the right that leads uphill. Continue straight on at the next two junctions.

(2) Carefully follow the D960 to the right towards a level crossing with the Bas-Berry tourist train line. Turn left onto a service track to follow the line for 500 m, then cross it (Benjamin Rabier trail information panel). Continue to the Étang de la Foulquetière.

(3) At the end of the track, head slightly left, towards the south-west, along the access road to the leisure centre (hiking sign). Turn right onto the path running alongside the pond (blue markings). Continue straight on along a small road for 150 m, then onto a farm track. Turn left onto a grassy path and continue straight on along the edge of the forest.

(4) Enter the woods (blue and yellow-red markings), then turn sharply right onto a white gravel path and join a small road, following it straight on for 100 m. Then turn right onto a small forest track. Continue straight on towards the north-east through the undergrowth.

(5) At the Ferme de Luçay, take the gravel path opposite until you reach the D960 and continue straight on along a small road. At a right-angle bend, leave the road and continue straight ahead along a farm track (GRP®® yellow-red markings).

(6) Leave theGRP®® by turning right onto the grassy path leading to La Rometière. Turn left to cross the hamlet, then follow the small access road to the right to the hamlet of La Tuilerie. Leave the path on the right and continue for 200 m, then turn right towards Bois Herpin.

(7) Pass the farm and continue along the grassy path north-eastwards, then eastwards. Follow the small access road straight on to La Lucettière. Continue for 100 m, then turn right down a farm track. After a bend, rejoin theGRP®® Benjamin Rabier trail and the yellow markings; follow these straight on, then head back up to the small road and follow it to the right.

(8) Cross the hamlet of Charnay, then the railway line, and reach the silos and the small station at Luçay-le-Mâle (Benjamin Rabier trail sign).

(9) Ignore the yellow markings ahead, which pass by the foot of the old La Forge dairy, and turn right (yellow-redGRP®® markings). Cross the bridge over the Mondon and turn left into Rue des Forges. Once behind a factory, turn left then right onto Rue des Falaises (D33).

(10) Cross the D960 with care and take Rue Henri de Rochefort opposite. At the wash house, continue straight ahead.

(11) Follow theGRP®® markings to the left to climb up to the castle (gate). Go back down at the junction to rejoin Rue Henri de Rochefort opposite (yellow markings) and cross a bridge.
At the next junction, turn left and head up a farm track.

(12) Turn right onto a grassy path running alongside gardens, then join Rue du Puits Chenu and follow it to the right. Then turn left and continue straight on to the church.

(13) Turn left onto the D960 and follow it to the Town Hall (S/E).
