The two banks of the Aulne as it winds through the hills

This walk will first take you along a quiet road through the surrounding hills with beautiful views, then along forest paths on the banks of the Aulne, in the shade of the trees and with lovely opportunities to dip your feet in the water.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at Locmaria-Berrien station, situated below the village, along the Aulne.

(S/E) Leave the car park and take the Greenway in front of the station until you reach the junction with the D769.

(1) Turn left, cross the Aulne and immediately afterwards turn left again onto the road leading uphill towards the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Paradis. Pass through the hamlet of Lescom and continue to the Chapelle du Paradis.

(2) Pass the hamlet of Saint-Quijeau, then take the path leading to the microlight base at Le Stancou until you reach the junction with a slightly larger road.

(3) A few metres before this junction, turn right onto a wide forest track and follow it straight on until you reach the junction with a small road leading back down into the valley.

(4) Turn sharply left and head down to the former mining site of La Fonderie.

(5) At the junction, turn right until you rejoin the D769 a little further down. Turn left and, 50 m further on, cross with care and leave the D769 to join a track on the right.

(6) At the junction with the Greenway, turn right and follow it down to the banks of the Aulne.

(7) Just before the bridge crossing the Aulne, leave the Voie Verte to the left and take a small path – be careful as this junction is poorly marked and has no signposts. Continue along this path on the left bank of the Aulne. Further on, there is a left-right bend. A little further on, the path turns left at a 90° angle, leaves the banks of the Aulne and begins to climb, until it reaches a junction with a beautiful, wide forest track.

(8) Turn right onto a fairly steep climb. At the top, follow a field on the right and a farm on the left, then head back down the same forest track along the riverbank and continue to Pont-Pierre (Pont Coz on the IGN map).

(9) Turn right, cross the bridge over the Aulne and continue straight on until the junction on the right withthe GR®37(White and Red).

(10) Turn right onto theGR®37and follow the Aulne, sometimes close by, sometimes further away, until you reach the junction at an altitude of 89. Please note: this point is clearly signposted, but you may miss it as you carry on, because up to this point theGR® has been wide and suitable for vehicles; at the junction, you must continue on theGR® but on a narrow, steep, and steep-sided path, whilst the wide track continues into the forest.

(11) Take this small path on the right, pass very close to the river, cross a small wetland and, a little further on, rejoin the greenway on the left, continuing to the junction with the D769.

(1) Cross the road, continue on and reach the car park at Locmaria-Berrien station (S/E)

Notes

This walk can also be done in two sections of 7 km each: the upper section through the hills and the lower section along the banks of the Aulne. Point (7) is common to both sections.

(S/E) Rest area, bar and light refreshments nearby (seasonal).

(7) A well-maintained direct access point to the river allows you to dip your feet in the water, relax and shelter from the sun or rain under the bridge.

(9) Picnic area in the meadow below.

Worth a visit

(S/E) The former Locmaria-Berrien railway station now serves as a reception centre for holidaymakers staying in caravans in the adjacent meadow.

(2) The Chapel of Paradise.

From (2) and (3), at Stancou, the microlight centre offers introductory flights and microlight lessons

(5) The former silver-lead mining site, in operation until the beginning of the last century. Only ruins remain (the mines having been sealed off and are inaccessible).

From (7) to (1), the banks of the Aulne, first on the left then on the right.

A very pleasant walk; the first few kilometres are on tarmac, but the rest is on a footpath. There aren’t many places to access the River Aulne, but at lunchtime there’s a spot where you can dip your feet in the water.
A brief explanation of the mines and the smelter would be welcome.
Thank you

A very pleasant, fairly easy and varied circular loop;
The section of the Vélodyssée is pleasant to cycle along, and the quirky little bistro ‘La Cabane bleue’ is a welcome addition in an area where restaurants and bars are few and far between

Hello
A very pleasant route; the first part is a bit tricky, with a steep incline on the tarmac, but the rest is fine, thank you

Hello,
A very pleasant route, apart from perhaps the first third, which is less so (a tarmac section). A lovely, undulating spring ride, but not difficult. Thank you for this route.
