Description of the walk

In Les Angles, follow signs for Lac de Balcère, then take Rue de la Piste Verte. At the end of the street, pass the ski slope maintenance buildings and carefully set off along the forest track, the condition of which is uncertain. Cycle for approximately 2.5 km and park in one of the small car parks just before Font Grossa.

(S/E) Continue on foot along the forest track, leaving the path from Lac de Balcère on your right, and carry on to the Estany de la Balmeta

(1) Walk along the left bank of the pond and carry on to reach the Refuge de la Balmeta.

(2) Cross the yellow and red-marked GRP® Tour du Capcir trail and continue straight ahead, following the trail marks across the meadow, heading north-west. From there, head for your destination: the large pass between the two Pérics, situated at 2,612 m.

(3) Look out for a large, isolated rock on your right; cross the stream and follow the gradually ascending trail marks towards the pass.

(4) Spot the return path on your right and carry on straight ahead.

(5) Cross the Rec du Puig Péric and follow the path, still heading towards the pass, reaching it after a very steep final ascent with tight hairpin bends.

(6) Climb to the left, heading west, to reach the summit of the Grand Péric (2,810 m).

(7) Descend back to the pass.

(6) Continue straight on, heading east, to reach the summit of the Petit Péric (2,690 m).

(8) Take the very steep, almost straight descent on the right, halfway down the slope, which leads to a flat area.

(9) Turn right and rejoin the ascent path.

(4) Head left and follow the ascent route in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

A wild and popular high-mountain route, requiring good physical fitness and suitable equipment: walking poles, mountain boots, appropriate clothing and food, maps, a compass and the Visorando app.

Steep, grassy or rocky terrain.

In the mountains, grassy slopes are just as dangerous as snow-covered ones, so stay alert!

Only set out on this route in very good weather with good visibility: no wind, no rain, no cold!

It can suddenly get very cold at altitude, and storms can build up very quickly!

Worth a visit

The panoramic views from the summits of the Péric range are breathtakingly beautiful, overlooking the lakeside landscapes of the Bouillouses, the Carlit, the Camporels and the Étangs des Pérics. As well as the surrounding peaks: Mortiers, Baxouillade, Roc Blanc and Pic de la Camisette.

Furthermore, the approach route passes through vast forests and meadows where, in season, you can hear the bellowing of the stags. You might even be lucky enough to spot a stag galloping off, followed by his does.
