Les Deux Pas in Les Écouges

This walk, in the Écouges, passes through two ‘pas’: the Montbrand and the Pierre Taillée. It is very well signposted. Pleasant during heatwaves as it is mostly in the woods. At the ‘pas’, magnificent views over the Isère plain.

Description of the walk

Park in the Chabert car park (882 m).

(S/E) Head towards Le Rivet along a wide stony path running alongside a stream. Signs indicate the way at every junction.

(1) Start of an alternative route to Le Rivet via the Sentier des Fougères: otherwise, stay on the wide path and head for the hamlet of Le Rivet.

(2) Continue eastwards across the meadow, following the signs for “Pré du Sabot” and “Pas de Montbrand”.

(3) At Pré du Sabot, continue straight on, uphill: the direction to Pas de Montbrand is clearly signposted.

(4) At this point, do not miss the fork to the left, heading uphill: there is a signpost. Access to Pas de Montbrand is via a narrow path with a steep gradient but no major difficulty.

(5) Cross the pass and take the lovely signposted descent leading to the junction with the GR®9.

(6) Head up to the left and continue until you reach the sign for “Sous Pierre Taillée”.

(7) Head up to the left: it’s very steep, so take care if it’s raining! The path is wide. Don’t let the effort make you miss the turn-off at the cairn on the right, a few dozen metres after a flat section.

(8) Leave the wide path and head up to the right along a narrow track to reach the Pas de Pierre Taillée.

(9) Take the time to admire the superb view and perhaps have a picnic.
Signs indicate the way back. Take the descent via steps towards Fessole, along a pleasant path. Cross the large meadow at Fessole and pass in front of the building.

(10) A few metres further on, head down to the left. At this point, there aren’t many markings. Follow the tracks down through the meadow, then walk alongside rows of beech trees before coming to a trail marker which you should follow due south, downhill, to the Pré du Sabot, which you passed on the way up.

(3) Head down to the right, following the route back the way you came, towards Le Rivet: signpost.

(2) Head down the wide path, retracing your steps from the outward journey, and admire the Versoud waterfalls on your right. Depending on your preference, there are well-signposted alternative routes such as: the Sentier des Sougères, the Sentiers des Sharp Limestone Pavements, and the Sentier de la Scie. All lead back to the wide path returning to the car park (S/E).

(2) Shelter available at Le Rivet. If you’re up for it, a magnificent viewpoint is a 5-minute round trip towards the chapel: it’s also well signposted.
Streams can provide water if you have filters or Micropur.
You’ll often be in the shade on this hike.

Worth a visit

The hike starts on a trail that is almost 5 km long... To avoid this, take the Chartreuse path instead and visit the ruins of the church and the Tuf waterfall, then the Saw path and the Ferns path... lots of very muddy forest tracks... A nice climb to reach the Montbrand pass. There is only one viewpoint at the carved stone pass.

This hike is fantastic in terms of the experience and the views; I’d say the only issue is the trail markings, which are sometimes almost worn away or missing, which can make the route tricky if you don’t have the app open

It’s a lovely walk offering some beautiful views. At this time of year, you can also enjoy the beautiful autumn colours. However, at the moment, due to recent rain and forestry work between points 3 and 4 and between point 3 and the descent from Fessole, the path is very muddy.

A lovely walk, mainly along forest tracks or very good paths, so it’s not difficult. There is a fairly steep climb to get over the Pas de Montbrand, but it’s not difficult. If you’d like to avoid the first 4 km of track, you can take (on the way there and/or back) the Chemin de la Chartreuse, then the Chemin de la Scie, and finally the Chemin des Fougères. This takes you through some magnificent trees and adds variety to the walk.
PLEASE NOTE: The path leading to the Pas de Montbrand and the one leading to Fessoles will be closed from Monday to Friday during September and October 2023. There are plenty of signs at the start and at various junctions informing you of this restriction.

Yes, sorry. The start is after the Col de Romeyere. Visorando has listed “Autrans”, but I think it’s actually in the municipality of Rencurel or St Gervais? There’s an option to go to the start, which will take you there.

Hello, I wanted to go on this hike on Tuesday 11 July but couldn’t find the starting point, which is the Chabert car park in Autrans. The locals in Autrans don’t seem to know where it is, so it would be helpful to provide more details, at least for this hike, as I don’t think the start is actually in Autrans as indicated? Thank you
