Park in the Chabert car park (882 m).
(S/E) Head towards Le Rivet along a wide stony path running alongside a stream. Signs indicate the way at every junction.
(1) Start of an alternative route to Le Rivet via the Sentier des Fougères: otherwise, stay on the wide path and head for the hamlet of Le Rivet.
(2) Continue eastwards across the meadow, following the signs for “Pré du Sabot” and “Pas de Montbrand”.
(3) At Pré du Sabot, continue straight on, uphill: the direction to Pas de Montbrand is clearly signposted.
(4) At this point, do not miss the fork to the left, heading uphill: there is a signpost. Access to Pas de Montbrand is via a narrow path with a steep gradient but no major difficulty.
(5) Cross the pass and take the lovely signposted descent leading to the junction with the GR®9.
(6) Head up to the left and continue until you reach the sign for “Sous Pierre Taillée”.
(7) Head up to the left: it’s very steep, so take care if it’s raining! The path is wide. Don’t let the effort make you miss the turn-off at the cairn on the right, a few dozen metres after a flat section.
(8) Leave the wide path and head up to the right along a narrow track to reach the Pas de Pierre Taillée.
(9) Take the time to admire the superb view and perhaps have a picnic.
Signs indicate the way back. Take the descent via steps towards Fessole, along a pleasant path. Cross the large meadow at Fessole and pass in front of the building.
(10) A few metres further on, head down to the left. At this point, there aren’t many markings. Follow the tracks down through the meadow, then walk alongside rows of beech trees before coming to a trail marker which you should follow due south, downhill, to the Pré du Sabot, which you passed on the way up.
(3) Head down to the right, following the route back the way you came, towards Le Rivet: signpost.
(2) Head down the wide path, retracing your steps from the outward journey, and admire the Versoud waterfalls on your right. Depending on your preference, there are well-signposted alternative routes such as: the Sentier des Sougères, the Sentiers des Sharp Limestone Pavements, and the Sentier de la Scie. All lead back to the wide path returning to the car park (S/E).
