The Autrans waterfall

This is an easy and well-known hike in Autrans. The advantage of this hike is that you can start in the middle, at point (5), and shorten it by about 1 km at point (9). It's perfect for those with shorter legs! You'll see Autrans from a different perspective than from the ridges. Please note that the waterfall has a very low flow in dry weather, or even no flow at all. However, the charm of this place, combined with the forest walk, will delight you. Hike suggested by the local tourist office.

Description of the walk

Departure from the Autrans Tourist Office. There is a large car park on the left of the office, or else near the roundabout on the Route de Grenoble.

Yellow and red GRP® Tour des Quatre Montagnes signposts

(S/E) Get kitted out and head south-east, going up Rue du Vercors until you reach the roundabout on Route de Grenoble. Turn left onto Rue de Puilboreau and follow the pavement on the left-hand side. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue du Cornet. Go past the campsite and go up the slightly sloping street, which curves to the left.

(1) At this point, the street levels out and turns right, heading east and uphill. Take this road, ignoring the street that descends to the left. Go up a dead-end street towards Le Bouchet: 20 minutes and 1.2 km.

(2) Leave the paved road and continue on a white gravel path climbing eastward. At the top of the white path, on the right, you will see a mound that was a fort in ancient times.

(3) At the junction with the tarmac road, cross and continue straight ahead. Go up Route du Bouchet to reach a square used as a car park: signposted "La cascade", 10 mins and 0.7 km. Some tools for shoeing animals have been gathered there.

(4) Turn right and go up Chemin de la Fournelle (formerly Route de Bellecombe on the map). You will reach a place called Le Bouchet (1,118 m).

(5) At the crossroads, turn left and go up the stony Chemin de la Fournelle towards the waterfall signposted 5 min - 0.4 km.

(6) Turn left. Follow the Méaudret and reach the waterfall on the left in the meadow: access via a descending path.

(7) The waterfall cascades into the meadow, which is a popular picnic spot. Retrace your steps, turn right to cross the Méaudret.

(8) Take the path heading north-northeast. This path climbs and comes to an alpine barrier. Turn right at the barrier, then immediately left onto the path to go around the alpine pasture. Climb and follow the alpine pastures in the shade at the edge of the forest. You will reach a fork at a place called Combe Payraud (1,164 m).

(9) Take the path on the right, climbing for a few metres towards the north: signpost "La Molière, 2h05 and 5.3km". A shortcut is possible by descending to the left. After the short climb, arrive at Combe Payraud (1177 m) and continue straight ahead: signpost "La Molière (4.6 km), Le Grand Champ (20 min and 1.2 km)". Reach a paved area.

Green and yellow markings

(10) Take the hairpin bend to the left and follow the tarmac road heading south-southwest. At the crossroads, turn left onto Route du Guinchet and you will soon return to the car park you passed on the way out.

(4) To return to Autrans, retrace your steps and descend Route du Bouchet on the right.

(3) Take the white gravel path opposite and rejoin Rue du Cornet.

(2) Continue straight ahead.

(1) Continue left on Rue du Cornet, pass the campsite again, then turn left onto Rue du Puilboreau. At the roundabout, turn right and you will find the Tourist Office in the town centre and the car park (S/E).

Notes

The Autrans-Méaudre Tourist Office offers several other short, easy walks of a similar type.

There is no water along the route. The waterfall may be reduced to a trickle or even dry.

Wear low-cut shoes. The forest section is not difficult.

You can shorten this route by starting at (5): To do this, take the car, head towards Grenoble (D106c), pass the ski jumps on your right, then at the top of the hill after the bend, turn carefully left towards Le Bouchet: traffic is fast. Be sure to reach point (5) to park, as any other location will be inconvenient for locals. (NB: between (2) and (3), cars are not allowed)

At point (9), you can shorten the hike and descend to the left, towards the west, to rejoin the return route.

Worth a visit

The centre of Autrans is the perfect place to end your walk.

The Gève plateau is renowned for the quality of its walks

Méaudre is also a town centre worth visiting and, at certain times, the Colibris farm welcomes you to see the animals (sustainable farming).

The section between Autrans and Le Truc is not particularly interesting.
Otherwise, it's a nice little walk

A pleasant walk when the weather is warm, but at the end of summer there is no waterfall, so it is better to visit in spring
