Park at Place de la Mairie. A sign indicates an 11km hike, which inspired me to create this one.
(S/E) From the roundabout, take Rue Pasteur for 200 metres and turn right downhill for 170 metres. Turn left for 25 metres (old wash houses on the left).
(1) Turn right for 80 metres, then continue on the left for 190 metres. After another 190 metres, at a fork, follow the left-hand path. After 780 metres, the path turns left.
(2) Turn right along the pond's channel until you reach the canal.
(3) Take the canal bridge on the left and follow the edge of the canal to the double lock at L'Aiguille.
(4) Before turning back, take a moment to admire the works of sculptor and lock keeper Joël Alluvial Plain! Return to the canal bridge.
(3) Continue straight ahead on the towpath. Cross the stone bridge with its entrance perpendicular to the structure. Continue for another 1 km to reach the old metal railway bridge.
(5) Continue straight ahead for another 300 metres and you will come to the second lock at Puichéric.
(6) From the lock, turn back towards the metal bridge.
(5) Take the path on the left. After 100 metres, continue on the left, slightly uphill. A tarmac path leads back to the starting point at Place de la Mairie (S/E).
This walk is a great way to relax your legs after more challenging hikes with elevation changes: a "holiday" route in August. There are many boaters at the two locks on the canal and cyclists on the towpath. So, it's a very busy route given the popularity of the canal, but everyone gets along well despite this (and in fact, there are few walkers). Of course, the sun was beating down on those without hats and unprotected skin, but all hikers are well equipped! So, without pushing yourself, it takes two hours for the walk, including a short stop to quench your thirst and chat with the lock keeper. A little treat before tackling the brambles and hills.
