Alaric between valleys, ridges and splendid views

A beautiful circular route around Alaric, along ridges and valleys from north to south, offering views of the Montagne Noire, the Aude valley from Carcassonne to Lezignan, and the Corbières Massif with the Pyrenees in the background, surrounded by vegetation including thyme, rosemary, boxwood, pine and lavender. Very quiet paths.

Description of the walk

Access from the village of Douzens: take the small road called Chemin des Argalats.
Park at the end of the road, after the tunnel under the motorway.
The road is passable as far as the small car park in the woods.

(S/E) Take the path at the end of the car park, then the path going up to the right, leaving the path that continues into the Combe du Gravier.
N.B. An alternative route is possible by following the Combe du Gravier path, as the two paths meet before reaching the ridge.

(1) Keep to the right, ignoring the paths on the left that climb up from Combe du Gravier.
This climb, which is sometimes rocky, offers beautiful views of the Aude plain and the Montagne Noire, with lovely passages through the undergrowth dotted with beautiful box trees. You will come out onto an open area and join theGR®36.

(2) Follow it to the left and climb straight up to the summit of Montagne d'Alaric to reach the watchtower and enjoy the panoramic view.

(3) Descend a few metres to take the path along the southern ridge, following theGR® sign pointing to Lagrasse on the left. Follow this path along the ridge towards the Saint-Michel de Nahuze priory, a former place of worship of which two sections of wall remain. Enjoy the view of the Orbieu Valley, the Corbières Massif and the Pyrenees mountain range.

(4) Shortly before the priory, take the path downhill to the right. Watch out for ruts in some places. The path ends by following a valley and leads to a small, quiet country road.

(5) Take the D114 on the right. Pass the hamlet of Les Illes to reach the place called Lodge La Fraissinède, which is indicated by a sign.

(6) Go around the tennis court, then the lodges. At the end of the circular route, turn sharply onto the path that climbs to the right. You will reach the crossroads of a path leading to Crès de la Heath.

(7) Follow the path on the right and begin a beautiful climb with views of the entire mountain. The priory visited earlier in the hike is visible on the right. After a pretty stretch through the woods, you will arrive at a small clearing.

(8) Turn left onto the path and follow it to join theGR®36. The path is marked by hunting posts.

(9) Take theGR®36to the right for about a hundred metres and then leave it to take the path on the left where a sign indicates Combe Migère.

(10) Follow the yellow-marked trail, descending along the valley on a rocky path.

(11) At the end of the valley, you will come out into an open area. Continue straight ahead (north) along the track that leads to the vineyards. Leave the yellow markings and rejoin the road. At the road, turn right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike completed in 5 hours at a good pace with few breaks. There is little shade, so take care in hot weather. High-top shoes are recommended as some paths are rocky. The entire hike is not marked, so a GPS device is recommended.
Check the weather forecast as the wind can be strong in the mountains (autan wind).

Worth a visit

Between (3) and (4) Beautiful views from the summit and ridges. Beautiful valleys.
Between (5) and (6) Take a break along the stream on the left, where a few pools and small waterfalls are directly accessible from the roadside.

Hike completed today.
The road to the starting point is not really passable until you reach the forest car park, unless you have a high-clearance 4x4 vehicle.
It is best to park just after the tunnel under the motorway.
Very nice walk, pleasant path to the priory. After that, the path was average with deep ruts, so we turned back for safety reasons... perhaps wrongly, but the wind was quite strong that day with gusts of over 55 km/hour.
We'll do the whole thing again on a less windy and cooler day to see what the path is like after the priory, as the hike is classified as moderate.
A superb walk despite everything
14 km and 850 m of elevation gain in 3½ hours of actual walking.

A beautiful route, with varied Mediterranean flora, the scents of heath, and beautiful views of the surrounding villages.
Completed in a group of 10 people, all of whom were good walkers, in 4 hours and 35 minutes of active walking.
Lunch was taken next to the priory, in a spot that was fairly sheltered from the wind, which was blowing strongly that day, with gusts of up to 70 km/h.
I would recommend parking just after the tunnel under the motorway and starting the hike from there, walking up the hill opposite, as the path, although easy to walk on for a few hundred metres, becomes increasingly impassable towards the end.
On arrival, our statistics show 18.5 km and 800 m of elevation gain.

A very beautiful hike that took just over 6½ hours.
I think the elevation gain was greater than indicated.

A very pleasant walk, especially in spring when the flowers are in bloom. Best done when it's not too windy.
