Circular route from the watchtower via Moux

A challenging hike, with no major difficulties, apart from the total lack of signposting or, frequently, numerous signs that contradict this route. The route follows deeply rutted paths, with loose gravel underfoot. The start crosses a pine forest devastated by fire, but after that it’s pure joy through dense vegetation, consisting of pines, holm oaks, boxwoods, junipers, kade trees, and the full range of Mediterranean plants – a feast of scents. Avoid doing this in summer or after a storm.

Description of the walk

In Moux, take Rue Prosper Mestre Huc, then Chemin de la Grasse Ouest. Go under the motorway and head up to the lime kiln car park.

(S/E) Walk down the road towards the motorway for about 150 m and look for the start of a track on the left.

(1) Follow this track up to the left and, at the fork, keep to the path on the left and head down to the Ruisseau de la Caune.

(2) Continue straight on, following the stream until you reach a fork.

(3) Continue to the right, then, at the next junction, turn left and head towards a crossroads.

(4) Take the path on the right, despite the cross blocking the path. Continue westwards, cross the Ruisseau de la Josette, and reach a track.

(5) Head up to the left, due south, up the Combe du Gravier, until you reach the next fork.

(6) Take the path on the left, heading south-east. This path winds its way and joins the GR®36.

(7) Turn left and head towards the watchtower.

(8) Ignore the numerous signposts and look for a path branching off to the left as you descend from the watchtower along the track, heading south-east to a crossroads.

(9) Continue straight on to the viewpoint.

(10) Head back down to the fork.

(9) Head down to the right along a difficult path.

(11) Take the track on the right, follow the ponds and continue due north until you reach a track.

(12) Cross it and turn left to join the GR®77.

(13) Follow it to the right and return to the lime kiln car park (S/E).
