The upper reaches of Sevrier

Please note that the descent along the Chemin des Lézards can be technical depending on the terrain and weather conditions. Furthermore, the junction onto this path is difficult to find.
Highlights of this hike: cool forest air, walking along beautiful forest paths, and a few panoramic views of Lake Annecy

Description of the walk

Parking and start point at the Sevrier cemetery car park.

(S/E) Walk alongside the cemetery and take the path that runs alongside the properties. Enter the woods, then reach the edge of the woods. Turn left to find, immediately afterwards, a new crossroads.

(1) Continue to the right, first following the edge of the woods on a slight descent, then uphill, to reach the crossroads at the hamlet of La Combe

(2) Take the path on the left and continue climbing, now more steeply. After a series of hairpin bends, you’ll reach the junction marked
sign for Chalet de Barbenoire.

(3) Turn right for a few metres to reach the Croix du Chef-Lieu viewpoint.
Return to the Chalet de Barbenoire sign.
Continue straight ahead on the Chemin des Crêtes; this is the GR®96, which also forms part of the GRP® Tour du Lac d'Annecy. Follow the red and white markings towards Montagne Sud. You will reach a four-way junction.

(4) Leave the GR® here, continue straight ahead on the Chemin des Crêtes to reach the Croix de Cassenaz, and enjoy another stunning view of Lake Annecy from here.

(5) Continue along the Chemin des Crêtes, completing the climb to reach the signpost for Les Luzes.

(6) Turn left onto the Chemin des Lézards and begin the descent. Atthe first junction (Note: the entrance to the path can sometimes be difficult to find!), take the path on the left. You will reach another junction at a place called La Journière.

(7) Turn onto the path on the left. Continue downhill to reach another junction.

(8) Take the path on the right, then go round a hairpin bend to rejoin, further down, the Chemin des Provendes. Follow it to the right to reach the car park at Sevrier cemetery (S/E).

Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that,

That lizard trail does indeed cause a lot of problems...

I’ll try to add a warning to the hike description

The route description was good up until the ‘Chemin des Lézards’, where I lost track of the direction suggested by Visiorando. After going back and forth several times, I had to turn back and take the very steep path up the first climb. With the mud and leaves, plus the fallen trees blocking the path, it was tough going.
I should have read the reviews that mentioned the same thing about the path being hard to see after the lizards.
A beautiful hike, but very technical.

Unfortunately, the fog didn't lift all day over Lake Annecy, but we did have a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. We started with the 3 Crosses route and continued on to Sevrier. The route is well signposted except halfway down, where there are no signs at all. There is no signposted crossroads at La Journière. You have to use your common sense and keep heading left towards Sevrier. It's tempting to turn right because the path is well marked, whereas the one on the left is less visible and it's not immediately obvious that it's actually a path.

A walk that takes place almost entirely through woodland, with few views.
Due to the rain the previous week, the paths were slippery.
The route was easy to follow up to the start of the Lizard Trail, but after that we couldn’t find
the right path to get back to the car park (lack of clear directions) and ended up on another one further up the road.

Hello everyone, this is a forest route, apart from two spots where you can see Lake Annecy and the surrounding mountains. On the descent along the ‘Lizard Path’, we came across numerous tree trunks blocking the way, and at one point there were so many fallen trees that it was impossible to get through. We had to climb down the steep slope on the side where the terrain was tricky (leaves and slippery ground) and then had to climb back up in the same conditions to get back to the original path. I’d advise checking the conditions before doing this hike and, of course, avoiding it with children.

Thank you for this magnificent hike above Lake Annecy, which we had cycled around the day before. The scenery is spectacular, especially at this time of year when the trees are bare. The climb through the woodland is pleasant, and the arrival at the Croix du Chef-Lieu and Cassenaz is magical. What’s more, we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the summit of Mont Blanc. This hike was pure joy, even if the GPX track is essential. Another hiker had to turn back twice.

We completed this hike in about four hours, as stated. However, it should be noted that it can be very slippery.
