Description of the walk

Parking is available at the Auberge de la Shepherd's Hut car park.

(S/E) Head south along the path. After crossing the main road, take the first right. About 250 metres further on, take the small path on your left and continue until you reach Crêt de la Perdrix.

(1) Head east until you reach a crossroads. Turn right and, a few metres further on, turn left onto another small path. Continue along this path until you reach Crêt de la Chèvre.

(2) Leave Crêt de la Chèvre, heading north until you reach a small refuge.

(3) Turn right immediately after passing the small refuge and follow the path. At the first crossroads, continue straight ahead and then take the left-hand path. You should then follow the direction of Col de l'Étançon.

(4) Follow the small path heading due east. Take the first path on your right towards Crêt de l'Étançon. At the ridge, continue straight ahead towards Col du Racha to reach Crêt du Rachat (there is a metal antenna nearby).
Follow the path heading northeast to reach Col de Botte.

(5) Continue heading due east and, at the three-way junction, take the left-hand path. You will then pass north of Crêt de Botte and join a wider path.

(6) Head east on a fairly stony, sloping path. Then cross a large gravel car park and continue straight ahead. Climb up towards the barriers along the road and climb over them.

(7) Go around the large radio antenna to the north, following the path to the left of the entrance to the protected area. You will then arrive near Crêt de l'Œillon and must take a path to the north (be careful, you will have to walk over large piles of stones, so take extra care here).
Continue along a wider path for about 700 m to reach Chaux d'Égallet.

(8) Follow the path on the left and turn right at the first three-way junction. At the second three-way junction, turn left. Ignore the first path on the right and at the next three-way junction, turn right.

(9) Look out for a very small path on your right and follow it. The path is very steep and joins a wide track. When you reach this track, turn left and follow it for a few kilometres until you come to a three-way junction in the wide tracks.

(10) Turn left and follow the wide path for a few kilometres.

(11) Turn left onto the very stony central path and follow it. The path climbs steadily. Follow this path until you reach the Auberge de la Shepherd's Hut (S/E).

An easy hike with a very pretty section along the ridges.
From point 9, after a slightly steep descent, you walk along an uninteresting forest track with no views until you reach your destination.

Enjoy your walk in Pilat. The first part of this trail is very pleasant with several panoramic views for about 9 km. Towards the end, it loses some of its appeal as you return to the woods. A little info about camping: if you want to pitch your tent, the best spot is at the "crossroads" halfway along the route. If you start descending, it will be very difficult to find a flat, rock-free area. Please note that this trail is only partially marked, so it will be very difficult to follow without a GPX file

Thanks for the description and this great idea for a hike near Saint-Étienne.

The first part of the hike to Chaux d'Égallet and Hôtel Brûlé (not mentioned in the description) was lovely. Beautiful views, not too crowded, easy to follow signs and description (except for the first path up to Crest de la Perdrix, which was a bit hidden in the vegetation).

The return trip is less interesting: the descent is very steep, quite difficult to find, and badly damaged by recent storms (good shoes are a must!), followed by a wide forest road in poor condition (forestry work) with no panoramic views. I wonder if it would be possible to loop back to the Oeillon car park after the Chaux d'Égallet (there is a path on the IGN map, but I haven't tried it).

Don't forget to stop at the Auberge de la Jasserie after your efforts!

I did this hike in June 2025. It's a very beautiful hike with stunning views of the Alps and the Rhône Valley. I use a Garmin GPS for hiking, so I had no problem following the trail. The GPS file is perfect. The difficulty of this hike is the rocks on a good half of the route, especially on the descent.

A very beautiful hike, accessible to everyone of all ages.
It can get a little crowded at the start of the route up to Crêt de la Chèvre, but there are uninterrupted 360° views (weather permitting) throughout the first half of the walk, from the Alps to the Puys d'Auvergne mountain range.

The end is more difficult with a steep descent into the forest and a slight slope of +15% over the last 2 kilometres.

And what can we say about the blueberry tart at the Auberge as a reward!

A beautiful hike despite the unpredictable weather.
A beautiful view of the Rhône Valley and the Alps.
Not many people.
Accurate information from Visorando.
In short, a wonderful experience.

Great difficulty in finding the way back (last three kilometres) due to forestry work that had significantly altered a four-way crossroads.

Superb hike, beautiful views of the Alps. We met six people at the Cret de l'Oeillon and one person on our way back.

the most beautiful walk in Pilât... to be done in all weathers, from heatwave to blizzard... preferably in clear weather to see Mont Blanc and La Meige to the east and the Auvergne volcanoes to the west.

A beautiful hike with stunning views and surroundings (beautiful region)
the return to the Shepherd's Hut was tough going with the final climb and the heat
The highlight was at the shepherd's hut with ice cream and blueberry tarts...

A magnificent hike on a route with no particular difficulties: little elevation gain, beautiful nature at this time of year, constant birdsong, very few people, and varied terrain. I encourage all families to try this magnificent loop.
