Park in the small square next to the Croix du Planil. From here, the scenery is already very nice.
(S/E) Take the road towards Les Roches. After 50 metres, take the path that climbs to the right of the Auberge du Planil. Follow it to the first crossroads.
(1) From here, you have three options for reaching the Saut du Gier: turn left onto theGR®7(the return route for the itinerary described here); continue straight ahead into the forest; or descend to the right onto the poorly maintained (and little-used) path. Take the path that descends to the right. It is a bit neglected, but it is passable. At the next intersection, do not turn left, but continue down the less clean path. It will soon turn right and you will begin to see the road.
Join it and turn left for 80 metres. Then, in the bend, take the path that goes up to your left.
The path has been used for logging recently; it is quite wide and not very attractive. Follow it anyway.
When you reach the top, a clear-cut area will show you why the path was used for logging. Continue on until you reach a crossroads.
(2) On your left, you will see the path you left at the first crossroads. Now turn right. Descend to the Gier. Ford the stream (not difficult, as it is very small).
Continue straight ahead. You will soon emerge from the forest onto a scree slope offering a beautiful view. Continue along the same path to the next crossroads.
(3) The path that climbs to the left is not very visible. It is marked in black and white. Climb it, leaving a "path" on your right just before the Saut du Gier, and continue to the waterfall.
(4) It's a pleasant spot. You may see people climbing the rock opposite.
Turn around and take the "path" that climbs up to the left through the rocks towards the shepherd's hut. It's not really climbing, but you'll probably need your hands to grip the rocks or trees. Follow the black and white markings until you reach a junction with a fairly wide stone path.
(5) Do not follow the black and white markings, but head left. This flat path is welcome after the previous exercise. Cross the Gier and you will soon come to a new signpost.
(6) Turn left towards Planil and follow theGR®7(red and white markings). From here, the path is all downhill. Admire the landscape one last time from the scree and continue on theGR®, ignoring all the paths on either side. You will come back to the junction you passed on the way out.
(1) Return to the car park via the same route (S/E).
this route isn't particularly interesting. Also, be careful at one point where you have to climb up the side of a cliff or take a long detour, after which it's difficult to find your way back.
