Variation around the Pilat ridges

This is a lovely hike for exploring the Pilat ridges, with superb panoramic views of the entire Alpine range. The route takes you through a variety of landscapes, from scree slopes to coniferous forests and heathland covered with heather and broom. In season, you can pick wild raspberries and blueberries.
This route offers a return via a less frequented path through a deciduous forest.

Description of the walk

Parking
From Pélussin, take the D63 to the Col de l'Oeillon, then turn right to reach the car park just below the transmitter.

Hike
There are signposts at the main junctions.

(S/E) Take the forest path that climbs slightly and enters the forest at the end of the car park. This path goes around the Crêt de la Botte on the right. At the end of the forest, you will come to a small pass in the moorland.

(1) Leave the forest road and take the path that heads back into the woods on the left towards the pylon.

(2) This summit is called Crêt du Rachat. When you reach the pylon, enjoy your first view of the Alps. Continue along this path until it joins the forest path

(3) Leave the first path on the left and take the second one towards the Bourguisan chalet.

(4) At the chalet, turn completely left towards Crêt de la Chèvre. Continue to the cross for the view.

(5) Go back a few metres and take the path on the left towards Crêt de la Perdrix.

(6) When you leave the forest at the pass, turn left for a round trip to the rocky summit.

(7) This is Crêt de la Perdrix, the highest point of Pilat (1,432 m). Enjoy the view.

(6) On your return to the pass, turn left and descend through the fields to the Jasserie (a former convent converted into an inn).

(8) From there, follow the road for a few dozen metres until you reach the memorial to a plane crash during the Second World War.

(9) At this point, take the left-hand path, Sentier Claude Berthier. This path leads back to Crêt de la Botte.

(1) Take the small path that climbs up to the right of Crêt de la Botte (recognisable by the tower at its summit). At the top, take a moment to admire Mont Blanc, then begin your descent along the road. At the first hairpin bend, take the small path on the left that leads back to the forest path you started on. Then simply turn right to return to the starting point (S/E).

Hello,

Thanks for the info. A few additional details would have been welcome, but not necessarily from you. The signs are not always well positioned, especially at the junction of two paths going in the same direction.
After the shepherd's hut, there are no signs indicating where to make the loop before finding the stele at the side of the road. I suggest adding the four cardinal directions to the map extract.
Otherwise, there is no risk of getting lost, as the route is quite visible from the ridges.

An amazing hike, a must-do at least once in your life! But the restaurant, the shepherd's hut, is still as bad as ever, and has been for years!

Hike completed on a beautiful sunny autumn day.
Magnificent colours, not very difficult (and I'm not very sporty).
A little over halfway along the route is the Jasserie brasserie (which refused to serve me a coffee, even to take away, because they were hosting a banquet, even though the sign said OPEN).
This route is mostly in the forest or under the trees, with three peaks.
Perfectly pleasant, but very crowded... the beauty of Pilat is attractive

A beautiful trail along the ridges with stunning views of the Alps and the massif, returning down the other side through the forest.
Halfway along the route, you can stop for a bite to eat or a drink, or enjoy a blueberry tart at the Auberge de la Jasserie at the start of the return route as you descend from the Crêt de la Perdrix.

A very beautiful hike with superb views and no problems with signposting, but don't count on having lunch at the shepherd's hut – they don't deserve it, they're not at all friendly, which is a shame as the area is magnificent

A beautiful walk with magnificent views and plenty of shade – in short, perfect.
We left and returned to the shepherd's hut with the idea of having lunch there, but no luck: the owners are anything but business-minded. We finished our walk at 11:15 a.m. (we left at 7:00 a.m. to avoid the heat... absent!!!) but the restaurant doesn't open until 12:15 p.m. and they wouldn't budge (no offer to just sit at a table, reason: you'll just have to wait!!!).
Otherwise, we did a variation on the variation (15 km and 500 metres of elevation gain, descending through the Plapompaire woods, passing through the Paradis woods, the Girard woods, the Mantel and the Col de l'Oeillon.

A 10 km loop with superb views. I took a group of friends there, 10 of us in total.
The weather was perfect, not cold, not too hot, and there was hardly any wind this time. We had a picnic at Crêt de la Perdrix.
I didn't know about this variation, which allows you to do a loop rather than just a simple round trip. It's a very interesting variation that offers some different views and less stony ground on the way back.
Thank you very much!
Being able to track my position on the route helped me a lot in choosing the right path, as there are many paths in some places.
The terrain is rockier than most hikes, so remember to wear hiking boots that support your ankles if you're not used to this type of terrain.
On the way back to Lyon, we enjoyed a guided tour of the former Carthusian monastery of Sainte Croix en Jarez.
A very nice day!

A fairly easy hike, despite a few rocky and steep sections, but nothing serious.
Very beautiful views on both sides of the ridge, which you follow for part of the way.

A bit too crowded, but that's the price of popularity. Recommended outside of weekends if possible!

Superb 360-degree panoramic views. Paths are sometimes stony but passable.
