Park in the Plan car park, fairly close to Pralognan on the road leading to the helicopter landing zone. There are about ten spaces, which are usually sufficient, as there are few hikes starting from Le Plan.
Signs indicate the start next to the fountain.
(S/E) Take the right path westwards and you will reach the junction with the Col de Napremont path. Here you will find a cross, a bench and the remains of a ski lift.
(1) Continue straight ahead on the main path, which is marked Route Forestière, but which runs alongside the road rather than following it. When you reach the crossroads leading to the hamlet of La Croix, do not take this direction, especially on the way back, as La Croix is quite far from Le Plan.
(2) Continue following the signs for La Montagne along the forest road.
At a fork to the left, the marked trail separates from the forest road but runs alongside it, then veers north-west. Here you will find another trail junction.
(3) Cross the forest road and continue straight ahead. The trail joins a grassy area in a narrow valley (Combe de Jettemont). From an altitude of 1,700 metres, the trail winds its way up in beautiful switchbacks.
You will come to a T-junction with another trail. There are no signs at this junction. Five metres to the right, i.e. north-east, two metres above the ground, there is an old wooden sign pointing to Belvédère.
(4) Continue for about 150 metres in this direction to reach Rocher des Fattes and its circular viewpoint over Pralognan and its glacial domes to the north.
(5) Retrace your steps to the previous crossroads. Keep right on the upper path. Pass the bench. Continue following the La Montagne signs.
Several alternative paths join on your left.
(6) Continue climbing to the left, south-west then north-west until you reach the forest road.
(7) Take it to the right until you reach a large flat area at around 2000m at the edge of the forest.
(8) From here, you have two choices:
- go and see the spring, which is well signposted to the south,
- or head towards the few houses in the hamlet of La Montagne, visible to the north.
Then begin the final climb up the Grande Pierre corridor.
A series of very short hairpin bends will take you to the Col de la Grande Pierre, which offers beautiful views of the entire area.
(9) From the pass, turn almost 180° to the right to take the Crête du Mont Charvet trail. Take advantage of this route to examine the flora and geology. Edelweiss can be seen at the very beginning of the ridges. (Although we are not in the park, no picking is allowed).
Continue along this path to reach the Col de la Dent.
(10) Turn right towards Pralogan. Enter the forest and very quickly, as you come out, you will be looking down on the Col du Golet, a vast, welcoming meadow.
(11) Begin the descent on the right, leaving the Rocher de Villeneuve trail on your left, then pass several buildings along the way until you reach the 1905m contour at a place called Lanchetton.
(12) Be careful not to head towards La Croix. The signs indicate Pralognan via the forest road. Follow this direction.
You will rejoin the uphill trail at the crossroads you passed earlier.
(6) Follow the same route back.
(4) Leave Rocher des Fattes on your left to reach the La Croix crossroads.
(3) Take the path on the left that leads to the first La Croix crossroads.
(2) Take the path you took on the way there, which leads back to the car park (S/E).
