Departure from Steigenbach (between Wangenbourg-Engenthal and Obersteigen): car park at the information point at the intersection of the D218 and D224.
(S/E) Follow the road towards Obersteigen and cross the bridge over the Mossig river.
At a bend, turn right onto the Rotfels path, marked with a yellow disc. At a three-way junction, continue straight ahead, staying on the Rotfels forest path.
(1) Arrive at Rotfels, to the right of a crossroads: rocky platform with picnic tables, then follow a slightly downhill path to the left, marked with a yellow cross. Further down, find a forest path and follow it to the left.
(2) Continue along this path until you find a path branching off sharply to the right, marked with a blue cross. Descend via a stone staircase to cross the departmental road and follow the Ameisenthal road opposite.
(3) At the last houses, leave the road and turn left onto a path towards Freudeneck Castle (marked with specific fortified castle route signs), then turn right onto stone steps.
When you reach the castle ruins, access is currently not possible due to construction work.
Retrace your steps and turn left towards Wangenbourg Castle, following a short winding climb.
(4) At a small clearing, first turn right then left. At a place called Kittel Felsen, turn right downhill towards Wangenbourg, following the red ring markings. Cut across a forest path, first turn left then right to continue downhill. When you reach a road, continue straight ahead, crossing a stream.
(5) At Pont du Brocard, do not go directly to the castle but first turn left then right to climb a path parallel to the road, marked with a yellow triangle. Further up, cut across a path to continue straight ahead.
The path then turns left, then right again onto a ridge path.
(6) Find a forest path and follow it to the right, marked with a yellow triangle. See also the artwork "Gravitation" on the Sculpture Trail on the left. Continue straight ahead on the main path towards Wolfsthal. Further on, ignore the sign for the campsite on the right.
(7) At a crossroads, turn right towards a barrier to reach Wolfsthal (table). See the information panel about the Sculpture Trail. Before the road, turn right towards Les Huttes Camping, marked with a yellow disc. Stay above the road towards Wangenbourg.
(8) At Camping Les Huttes, turn right onto a tarmac road, the Schneethal forest road. Further on, turn left onto a path leading downhill towards Wangenbourg. Pass a pontoon on the left, then a second pontoon on the right and follow a path on the left. You will come to a small road; follow it uphill to the Tilleul roundabout. Turn right opposite the castle. Enter the courtyard of Wangenbourg Castle and climb the tower.
(9) Retrace your steps and, before the car park, turn right towards Steigenbach, following the yellow signposts.
Further down, the path turns sharply to the left.
(10) In a hollow, cross a stream and continue uphill opposite. (Ignore the red diamond signposting down to the right). Higher up, turn right towards the fitness trail, then at the three-way junction keep left.
Stay on the edge of the forest, with the clearing on your left.
(11) Above the football pitch, at a place called Langacker, follow a road to the right, then descend to the right.
Cross the D218 and continue straight ahead. Join the RD in a bend and return to the car park (S/E).
