Les Chalets de Miage from La Gruvaz

A great classic in the area, with particularly bucolic scenery ("and in the middle flows a river"). Ideal for a long break, a picnic or a day in the sun by the stream.

Description of the walk

Start from the Gruvaz car park at the top of the hamlet of the same name. Please note that it is small! There is a municipal shuttle bus that takes you there from Saint-Gervais. The start is not very intuitive and is not signposted.

(S/E) Return by road to the hamlet of La Gruvaz.

(1) Take thefirst street on the right called Chemin des Chavannes.

(2) Take the first grassy path on the left, crossing a small bridge over a ditch. Go around the field downstream and join a path.

(3) From here, the signposts become more frequent. Turn right, uphill, towards the Chalets de Miage. The climb is steep. You are in for an hour of fairly strenuous but fortunately shaded walking to Le Tranchet.

(4) Continue straight ahead towards the Chalets de Miage. The end of the shaded area also marks the end of the steep section.

(5) This is clearly the most pleasant part of the hike, with the destination in sight for about an hour and a gentle climb along the Gruvaz Gorge on a sometimes narrow path. This section can be a little tricky with young children or dogs: keep a close eye on everyone. Arrive at the Chalets de Miage.

(6) This is a very popular spot, especially with hikers walking the TMB between Truc and Tricot.

(7) Follow the signs for "parking Gruvaz" on the right to descend via the carriage road. It is impossible to go wrong. Occasional passing of vehicles. This section is of no particular interest.

(8) Keep to the right to finish the descent, heading towards "parking de la Gruvaz" and reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

(6) Shelter and food: please note that card payments are not accepted. Drinking water source, public toilets, "tolerated" bivouac area.

The return route is completely uninteresting. If you have the energy and time, we highly recommend taking a detour to the Truc chalets (+40 mins and +150 m elevation gain) or even Mont Truc (add another 20 mins and 100 m for a 360° panorama: steep climb like at the start of the hike).

It is possible to do the hike in the opposite direction (anti-clockwise) but this is not recommended as the descent will be very steep and you will have most of the interesting scenery behind you.

Worth a visit

From the top of the Gruvaz car park, you can walk along the bottom of the gorge. It is a dead end.

Every year on 15 August, we go on this very pleasant hike (Ahh, the omelette with everything and the Miage cup...).
We just turned 70: every year, it seems like it gets a little harder... strange.
But we'll be back next year anyway!

A superb hike that allows you to approach and admire some of the peaks of the Mont Blanc range.

A very beautiful hike, with a rather strenuous start up to the plateau, but this is quickly forgotten once you arrive at the refuge. The scenery is magnificent.

A very beautiful hike with a total elevation gain of 780 metres. The first 400 metres of elevation gain are intense, but excellent for cardio. Once you reach the top of the Chalets de Miage, the view is spectacular. A magnificent setting with the Dôme de Miage. At the Chalets de Miage, you tackle the moraine to climb the fairly steep but short pass. From the pass to Mont Truc, there is another short steep climb.
Then descend via the 4x4 track, which is uninteresting but excellent for a descent.
Highly recommended.
