Les Chalets de la Balme via the hamlet of Les Vachers and the Arête de la Lauze

Pass under trees, pastures, rocky outcrops, streams and enjoy unobstructed views of the peaks. A superb condensed route that is well worth the detour and requires a little effort.

Description of the walk

Parking is available in front of the Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves Tourist Office.

(S/E) With the Tourist Office on your right, go down the street and take the Chemin des Glaciers pedestrian path on your right. This quickly becomes a one-way road. Keep to the right at intersections and pass a large car park and then the Chalet du Moulin.

(1) Continue to the left of the Plan du Moulin Express chairlift. Start the climb on the left-hand track. The track curves and, before passing under the chairlift, turn left onto the path.

(2) Climb under the trees. Return to a wider path and continue climbing. Pass the chalets of the hamlet of Les Vachers. Continue and you will come to a track. Turn left, pass the Croix de la Troche and continue to thefirst path on your right, at a place called La Troche.

(3) Take this path towards the Chalets de la Balme. Climb and continue until you reach the junction with the path leading down to the Chapelle de la Paix.

(4) Ignore this path and continue climbing. Follow the path, ignoring the path leading to the ski lift, and pass the remains of old chalets. First, you will hear and then see the Rieu Blanc stream.

(5) Ford a tributary of the stream (dry in August 2022) and begin climbing alongside one of the stream's branches. Pass a rocky outcrop and you will arrive at La Balme Dessus. Then descend towards the intersection with a track.

(6) Continue straight on towards the Chalets de la Balme. Pass the chairlift and follow the track to the signpost.

(7) Turn right towards Saint-Sorlin via Combe de la Balme. Ford another stream and cross a small bridge. Descend the path overlooking the stream for 1.5 km until you reach a track.

(8) Continue left where the track turns right and joins another track. Descend to the road.

(9) Turn right and enter Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves. Pass in front of the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel.

(10) Continue through the village until you reach your car park (S/E).

Notes

There is also parking before (1), Route du Plan du Moulin, not far from the chairlifts and ski lifts.

Benches: at the Croix de la Troche, just before the (3)

The climb from the (5) to the (6) is quite steep, the only difficult part of the route.

The climb to the Point de Vue de la Pointe de la Roche Noire viewpoint is unnecessary as there are only wide slopes to get there and many tourists arrive by chairlift. The view is the same as the one you have had throughout the hike.

There is no drinking water along the route, and the Chalets de la Balme restaurant is closed in summer. The water in the streams you encounter is likely to be unfit for consumption as there are sheep and cattle grazing in the area.

At the9, once you enter Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves, you can take the little train that will take you down to the Tourist Office free of charge. It runs twice an hour.

Worth a visit

During:
View of the Crêt d'Ornon.
View of the Saint-Sorlin Glacier.
View of Les Perrons.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Chapel.

The first part of the hike is very beautiful and wild, with some lovely panoramic views. There is a short climb before dropping down to the other side, with a return trip that is much less interesting.

A pleasant, flower-filled hike with no difficulties and beautiful views of the peaks and then the St Sorlin glacier.

A very beautiful route! It can be done in the opposite direction to enjoy the view of the Aiguilles d'Arves from the front!

We went there during the off-season (15/06). I can't say if it's popular. Nice route, very well described with elevation changes. Beautiful views and lovely flowers!!! One downside: avoid parking near the Tourist Office, which has a 2-hour blue disc parking restriction in summer and winter.

Route completed at the end of June 2023 in good weather, a very pleasant route that starts in the woods and then continues through fields of flowers, particularly asphodel fields, which are magnificent at this time of year, with views of the glacier. You can reach the Etendard refuge if you wish.
